Little Switzerland NC

Anyone thinking about riding Little Switzerland NC......and the Diamond Back road? Great road! Not much to the 'town'....LOittle Switzerland Inn was a great hotel.....I would suggest staying in Asheville, ride up to Little Switzerland....and do the Diamond Back...visit a mine, and cavern or two...stay the night and ride back to Asheville the next day. Friendly folks...I think the hotel bar was the on;ly one around, so LOCALS are available for conversation.I even met people from near 'home'......some guy whose brother owns a bar in New Smyrna......(gonna work that angle)....

Couldn't agree more. That was my back yard area growing up in western NC. It was a great place to learn how to ride.

Garage
Banner Elk is about an hour NE of Lil' Swiz., better town, more to do, actual town. Stonewalls has great prime rib, there's a winery and coupla bars around.

While your near Little Switzerland, make a loop that includes NC Hwy 80, also known as the Devil's Whip, has its own website: http://www.thedevilnc80.com/ It's one heck of a ride and longer than Diamondback/226A.

Lots of great great roads around Little Switzerland but IMO the Diamondback ain't one of them. I like a curvy road as much as the next guy but the Diamonback is an accident waiting to happen. It's too narrow with no shoulders. If you're really getting with the program you're leaning into oncoming traffic. I asked the girl at the gift shop at Little Switzerland if there were a lot of wrecks on the Diamonback and she said she didn't know she had only worked there a week but there had been a head-on collision over the weekend Hmmmmm

Saying that though the whole area is crazy fun and my favorite place in the country to ride....except maybe Colorado

Great road to sharpen the floorboards. If you are riding hard, takes all your concentration.
Did they get the 226A paved? First week of May it was terrible.
The tar they used to patch the cracks didn't adhere to the road. Large tar snakes were loose and piled up in the road.
Was a challenge trying to avoid the hurdles.
When headed south from Little Switzerland on the BRP- 44 miles is Town Mountain Road on the right. Another narrow road with lots of twists and turns down to Asheville

Mama told me I would meet people like y'all !!!

226A was all newly paved as of last week. Thery DID however, fill in the edges of the road with gravel....and some corners may have a rock or two in the travel lane.
Brabara and I stayed at the Switzerland In.....right in Little Switzerland, and if I had to do it again, I would stay in or just outside Asheville......and make the two hour ride up and do the 226A (Diamond Back) ride.Or else ride up and spend the night at Little Switzerland.
Barbara and I had a good time, none the less.
