Healthy eating ideas/recipes

With so many of us fighting the weight/health issues and talking about them. I thought we could share healthy food ideas and tips. I have a friend that told me diet is 90% of weight issues. He is a trainer/mma/ the guy we all hate with his 7% body fat......

I cut out cokes and french fries. Replaced them with water and sweet potato. ( just add cinnamon).

Eat alot of chicken (grilled) with vegetables.

I am single so cooking sucks and I am far from a good cook but I have a few simple things I will add if this thread takes off. It may sound like I am trying to be an expert and by no means am I or want to sound that way....I am hoping to find ideas and maybe help others with some stuff I have learned.....

I'm gonna try a little revival on this thread here because I think its a cool idea.

Good recipe for single folks and busy folks is to simply place a whole chicken in the crock pot. Ball some aluminum fool and put on the bottom of the crock pot to set the chicken on. Rub the chicken with whatever flavoring you like set it on low and head to work, by the time you get home, BAM awesome chicken just don't eat the skin and all the grease will be below the aluminum foil you put in the bottom of the pot. Garnish with some veggies and your good to go.

Crock pot pork loin:
1 pork tenderloin
Chicken broth in bottom, typically one container depending on crock pot size
Squeeze 1 orange into the broth
Squeeze 1 lime into the broth
1 tbsp cumin
about a 1\2 cup of cilantro chopped up
put it all together in the pot and forget about it, makes really good carnitas if you wanna shred it up and eat it like that.

OK, here is a type of blender smoothie that I use during the day to replace a meal. In your blender dump a can/carton of some type of protein drink/weight loss shake/etc. I like vanilla flavored but you can get most any flavor. And I buy 11 oz. Premier brand vanilla protein drinks at Costco--about $22-$23 for a case of 18. You can buy various flavors of Ensure in the grocery but Ensure has a few more fat grams. Now put 2 good sized bananas, or maybe 3 smaller ones, in the blender. Throw in 3-4 ice cubes to chill it, then a large dollop of peanut butter (Peter Pan reduced fat) as your "flavor enhancer".

Lately I have been mixing a double dose--fills the blender--but many days that is the only thing I have to eat until a sensible dinner. But a full blender really fills me up and stays with me for quite a while. And at 6' I have been keeping my weight between 175-178.

Pretty simple for me--I just have to eat less than what I used to eat, and I haven't ordered a dessert in almost a year. Gave up sweet tea, very seldom have anything fried, only "lite" sour cream, no real butter, only Turkey bacon on sandwiches, only very lite salad dressings.

So many foods I have given up but my weight is down and I never really go hungry. Now if I can have the same success with giving up these damn cigs I will feel like a winner (been almost smoke free since 6/1--only bummed a couple).

One of my favorite quick, easy and healthy meals is:
in a frying pan add olive oil, salmon fillets, and a pack of frozen stir fry vegetables(broccoli, snow peas, asparagus, carrots, etc). I then empty my seasoning cabinet in this with curry, cayenne, garlic, onions, pepper etc. Cook for 5-7 minutes. It is quick, healthy, and delicious.

nothing to add here other than one thing that has always worked for me and makes sense

pay attention to how food is cooked :

those of us in the south have lived on fried foods for hundreds of years

pay attention to the stuff you add to the foods :

the baked potato may sound good but lay off the sour cream and butter

eat slower :

if you eat fast , your stomach doesn't have time to tell your brain "I'm full"

don't overload your plate with food and don't go back for seconds

On Joe's smoothie, Premier protein drink is not only less expensive than Ensure it also has a lot more grams of protein. That is why I started using it. I tried your recipe for a smoothie and it is good and a lot more filling than I thought it would be. Thanks for sharing the recipe.

South Beach Diet

If you really want to start loosing weight quickly, avoid all starches, carbs and sugars for 2 weeks: No potatoes, no sweet potatoes, no fruit, no sugar, no bread, no corn, no carrots, no pasta, no grains, no alcohol.
eat beans, eggs, Vegetables, leafy greens, nuts, and low fat meats and cheeses only.
Eat 3 square meals a day, and snack in between meals with celery, LF cheeses, and nuts.
Eat as much leafy greens and celery as you want. You should feel relatively full on this diet. You dont want to starve yourself! Snack sensibly!
After 2 weeks, add one whole grain to your daily diet: one piece of Whole grain toast, a bowl of old fashioned oats(not the quick cooking kind) or brown rice.
After 2 weeks of adding some grains, start introducing some fruit, like a small apple, pear, grapes etc.
a tablespoon or two of peanut butter on fruit or celery is tasty and good for you. Try not to eat more than about 15 nuts when snacking between meals.
Try to stick with this diet.
Yogurt is ok at this point too, but avoid ones with sugar. plain yogurt with berries is good.
Have a glass of red wine after dinner or choose a low or no sugar dessert. if you need to have a beer, drink a guiness. It has very little calories.
This will be your diet forever.
Now when you fall off this diet, like eating ice cream, cake, cookies, or go binge drinking, go back to the first part of the diet with no grains fruit etc. for 2 weeks again, and slowly go back to the 3rd stage of the diet.
It will work. i lost 13 pounds the first 2 weeks, and lost 30 pounds in a little over a month. I didnt need to lose that much weight, and never intended too, so i splurge a little more often. Im a carbaholic, and could live on crackers, bread, pizza, beer and cocktails.
But this diet has worked really well for me and my fiancee.

Super Easy Lunch I do at work sometimes if I have left over chicken breast I recently grilled. Could also use a can of chicken if you want.

1 Boil in a bag rice.
Some salsa (freshly made is better than jarred but jarred is still better than a burger from Ronald)
Sometimes I'll buy an avocado to add as well.

Boil rice, throw salsa on top of rice, place chicken on top of salsa. Smash up avocado on side.

I learned this from a guy at work and as simple as it is, its pretty dag on good!
