Timing chain tensioners

I have heard some discussion about the oil pressure driven chain tensioners on our bikes. Mine is a 2011 ultra with 36000 miles. Is this something i should be replacing at a certain mileage point? Im thinking of doing cams soon so if its an issue id like to replace them. If not then ill keep rollin with what ive got

I did cams on my 88 inch, the tensioner was shot at 15K miles. If your doing the cams soon I would sure look hard at it.

The older spring tensioners actually got weak and faild. The newer hydraulic ones will wear down the chain guide over time. I seen some one on here take theirs apart at 50k and it still looked good.

if your in there , its always good to check.

I had mine replaced at 30,000 I have the 88CI Had the new set up installed with larger oil pump and bigger cams. The 2011 has the better design than the 88ci but the plastic shit shoes should be checked at about 30,000 miles.

I just checked mine at 40k, and barely any wear, on my 2011. Good for piece of mind anyways.

Tensioners was a problem with the older version like in the 88 tc, the "newer version 96tc and 103 tc" are not as much affected. The problem was not so much the were worn but also cracking/breaking from becoming brittle from what I've read.

The problem years were 2000-2006 before the hydraulic cam plate was introduced. One of these weeks I'll check mine with 32k on my 2013.

There should not be a problem with the hydraulic tensioner shoes until you hit 60,000 miles plus. At 60,000 miles they will show wear but you don't need to go out of your way to replace them but if your in the cam chest to do other stuff then inspect and replace them if needed at that time.
It doesn't hurt to put new shoes in if they fit in your budget.
When I swapped out cams last time my shoes showed enough wear that I changed them out.

I had an 05 103 SE engine lucky enough to buy the extended warranty. Only thing original on my engine was the heads after the tensioners went.. MOCO replaced everything for 50 bucks. Took out cases bottom end jugs etc.
