Turn Signal Disassembly Instructional

I haven't seen a thread like this so I thought I'd give some pointers to help anyone out.

This all happened b/c I am powdercoating a bunch of stuff off my bike.

I don't have any pics on removing the actual turn signals from the rear or front of the fairing to fender, however:

The front is pretty easy. You'll need to just remove the two from the inner fairing that holds the signals. while those are off you might as well remove the bracket that holds the fairing that is connected to the crash bar for powdercoating too.

As for the rear (if you have the FLTRX model) there is two bolts behind the fender that need to come off. 1/2" socket or wrench will get those off. Once you have the rear taillight assembly you can proceed with removing the license plate bracket and the license plate light. (those are pretty self explanatory).

On to turn signal disassembly:

Once you gained some slack you'll proceed with taking the lense and bulb out.

To remove the innards you start by using a small flat head screwdriver and puch into the rubber seal like the picture below:

push in and just gently pull back up and work your way around. It will start to release off the rubber seal easily

Once you have it popped out, it should look like this:

To give you more slack you'll want to push this retainer grommet that is permanently attached to the cable thru

Here is the photo from behind to show you the 3 connections to the light:
One(ground) is attached to the housing and two are the connection that comes in contact with the bulb

I recommend removing the two (2) cables (purple & blue) first to give you some room in the housing to remove the ground after. You will want to push those two cables thru and I suggest you push that rubber grommet attached thru the housing as well. see below

So...just push this thru and should look like the next pic.

If you notice the actual retainer holding the wires they have an slot each that allows you to remove the wire. just tug from the wire thru gently and it will come out. save that retainer in a safe place and remove the spring and don't loose them.

Ok...so the next spot may get some frustrated but this is going to help you out quite a bit. It took me a bit to figure out but once I did, hell, it was easy.

To remove the ground you will need some kind of small, very tiny screw driver or thin punch awl.

This pic shows what needs to be depressed to release from the housing

This pic shows were it is in relation to the housing. Once you hit that retaining clip dead on it will just slide out with a very gentle pull. So if it's not coming out gently you haven't done a thing to release it

Once you got one done the other side is the exact same thing and exact same wires and even the same colors.

Note prior to re-assembling entire. do a quick mock up and loose assemble to test lights before you start to bolt down anything.

Here are some troubleshooting tips:

once assembled and you turn on bike to test lights and........

The taillights comes one but don't blink......you have the terminals reversed. Just go back to the step where you push it thru and flip it 180 degrees.

You hit right turn signal and left one blinks........well I think if you done this much you'll know exactly what to do at this point.

Hope this helps someone to tackle this job

Oh the front is the exact same
