Mixing and matching performance parts

Okay well here it goes, what is everyones thoughts and opinions on mixing and matching performance parts as opposed to going with a package some companies sell you, as for example, I have a kuryakyn street sleeper high flow air cleaner with my fullsac sportpipe, mgs slip ons w/loud baffle and PV tuner running feuling 525 cams , I know certain companies want you to run there air cleaner with there choice of exhaust and cams to get proven performance, but I see like me a lot of members getting great results putting there own mix together by doing careful research and having knowledge of mechanics like I do since being a tech for 26 yrs in automotive. What do you members think?

You're probably spot-on for experienced engine guys like yourself. But for engine novices(like me) looking at the kit that has been tested and perhaps warrantied by a company may be a better fit.

I went with the HD stage IV Kit for that very reason.

Thanks, I have gotten pretty good results with my set up, I geared every thing I did towards maximum mid range torque, I was also glad that I could make adjustments with the power vision tuner with an auto tune as well as the quick tune feature to further tweak my fuel demand. I know a lot of the time some vendors sell spot on packages for there customers , I just wanted to tailor my to my personal preference.

I can see the concept behind a 'kit' or whatever an outfit may choose to call it , I dont think it matters much as long as the parts are quality .. Not into the hot builds much anymore , tho' I have something in mind when the 103 dies , when i was into it many years ago , it was S&S , Andrews and Axtell , and not much else .. To this day , I prefer those outfits over anyone else , because I know what I'm getting .. Most stuff out there is made by a couple outfits and they slap another manufacturers name on it for a fee ..

You ask so here is my opinion. The shops that do primarily Harley performance work have assembled "kits" in order to keep riders that have no idea of what parts will work together and refuse to listen to reason, from writing nasty-assed reviews of their shop on the internet. If you weigh 250 and ride a 900 lb bike, that cam your buddy told you about over beers (you know the one that makes 150hp guaranteed) ain't the right one for your stock street driven motor.

The only thing I would say Red Dawg is anytime you do a head change or head gasket change to increase performance, you need to be sure and set the compression on the engine to the compression that the particular cam you like to make it run at it's optimum. As far as pipes go, most good pipe with good mufflers will work really good on the low rpms and mid range rpms but where the difference is, is making horsepower up high from 4500 to 6000. That being said, most of us don't ride in those higher rpm ranges and would never notice the difference. For instance, with a D&D Fat Cat, the only difference in the dyno number from their performance baffle to the quiet perforated and wrapped baffle will be in the peek horsepower number and the quiet baffle makes a little more torque down low because of back pressure.

OMG is that the truth, I have heard more cam stories than I can think of, that's why I went with the advice of local dealer SE tech who is also a trusted friend. And yes I see guys throwing money away on race parts on a non-race motor 100% stock. Well said.

Ok here is my input,when i built my 01 RG from a 88 to 95 inch i did some research on cams compression ratios and flow numbers on heads with what knowledge i had,then i talked to my buddy who flows heads.Ended up not using a kit but i ran SE 10 1/4 to 1 pistons with ,03 head gaskets and SE 211 cams these cams had .508 lift and the duration was around 248 if memory serves me.I didnt want to run heavy duty valve springs or over sized valves,so my buddy ported and flowed my heads to the lift of my cam and using the theory that by just smoothing out the ports and not enlarging them with a fairly small cam would help keep the velocity up for faster cly fill.I had to trust him since i didnt know.Well the end result was 101 hp and 112 torque,this was with an early Magnetti fuel injection and a Thunderheader,granted this bike didnt start to come on hard till about 2800 rpm but that was ok with me since i rode solo 99 percent of the time.So no a kit isnt really needed.The nice thing about this site is that we have engine experts available to us that do this work every day so they can help steer us in the right direction.

2012 RG Vivid Black,contrast Anarchy wheels,SE air cleaner,cobra tuner,Thunderheader ,diamond cut heads and clys,Fueling Reaper 574 cams,this is just a starting point.
