1000 mile service advise

hello everyone my 2011 RGU is coming up for a 1k service.i need advise on doing it myself or bring it into the dealer.this is the exp.i got with 2 dealers and this is why im asking about what should i do.when i got the bike they swapped it from another dealer (didnt go to another dealer because they gave me a better dealer).so i drove the bike for about 300 miles and i would here alittle front end noise going over bumps.then the weather got bad and didnt ride it for about 2weeks.one morning going to work i was riding about 30-40 mph and started to slow down and i let go of the bars for about 3sec all of a sudden i get this very bad tank slap, wobble.then in the mist of this happing i was having a hard time putting it in N when coming to a stop called the dealer and they said it will get better with miles well it didnt and noticed my clutch cable had about 1/2in play called them again and they said its normal well i got pissed and spoke with the service manager he told me to come in just for them to find out it was not normal and that my neck bearing was loose.so that was my exp.right now with only less than 1k miles.what im thinking is if 2 dealers let this bike go this way how will i know that they check everything and changing the oils for 350.00.so what im really asking is it a bunch of crock that its a big service when i can change the oils, check tire pressure and etc.also if anyone here thinks i should do it myself what kind of oils should i use in eng, trans, prime.thank you sorry for the long story

my 08 RG and 11RG went to two different dealers for the 1k service , and I'll never be convinced that I got anything other than a $315 oil change and wash at one and oil change at the other ..

The 08 never saw the dealer again until I traded for the 11 and the 11 will never see the dealer unless it's warranty and I have no choice ..

You can do it yourself ..

Register at the HD website , if you havent already and I think it's in members section where you can put in your vin and the mileage and it will show you what to do for each service , print this , check everything off , date it and write your mileage , keep your receipts ..

There's plenty of oil options out there , and I am biased towards one myself , but get 4 qts Syn3 and formula plus for the trans ( 1 qt ) and primary ( 2 qts , takes one and a few ounces from the second ) and a filter , keep your receipts ..

One thing for sure, you will get two different answers on this over and over again.
Best thing I can say is if you feel comfortable with your dealer let them do it. If you feel 100% confident that you might be able to catch everything a tech might, then do it yourself. Personally, I feel the 1K service is the most important, and I trust my dealer.
That being said, shifting into N got much easier after the service, clutch play is now not there. My loose head bering is now tight and I have the confidence to take my hands off the bars at any speed. They checked many other things that I asked for that weren't on the "list".
What might take me maby 2 hours at the least do, I would rather pay the tech to do what he is trained for. JMO

I agree to the best of my knowledge if they dont do your big mileage maintenance 1k, 5k ,10k, etc. it may void any warranty you may have.

Its a common....

big misconception that the DEALER has to do any work on YOUR bike. Unless its warranty work of course and you are not capable of doing the maintenance yourself. Keep accurate records and receipts. Having a shop you can trust is important, unfortunately I don't trust anyone. Opinions on fluids is as wide as best windshields or seats. Do your homework and make educated decisions. Like John Wayne said life is tough, its tougher if your stupid. Don't sell yourself short, you can do it. If you aren't confident then bring it in and let the dealer do it.

Buy the book

buy the service tech book its the same book the service techs use that tells you everything you need to know and how to do any and all services to your bike. best 60.00 bucks I have spent. not being able to shift into neutral problem I had also switching to syn oil and adjusting the clutch fixed it for me. I just had 16in bars put on my 11 RGU get it back and clutch had play in it again couldnt get into neutral and front brake res. was leaking not to mention they pinched a wire and had some electrical problems. I paid them 1300 bucks for them to do this job I could have done myself and only cost me 525 in parts so I paid them another 800 bucks to screw things up basically. If you buy the book just read the 1000 mile service list its changing the fluids and checking the torque on alot of different screws as long as you have the proper tools I think any one could follow along in the book complete the service. good luck and if you have any problems shoot me a message I would be more than happy to help you out best I can and im sure others here would also.

1K svc

I too had a dreadful experience with my '08. The scoot was inside the work area for 25 min. max and they swore the complete svc was done. This was about 4 yrs. ago and I was "young & naive" (first bagger), needless to say I bought the svc manual and this bike never saw the stealer again except for the stuff I could not do (front wheel bearing chg).
Another option; don't know if the svc dept. at your stealer is set up to allow the work to be viewed as it is performed, if it's done behind closed doors ...ride away as fast as humanly possible unless you still believe in Santa.
If doing yourself, consider your mechanical knowledge and experience and you MUST have the appropiate svc manual.
