SWIII Return Route Ideas - St. George, Gand Canyon, Dallas

It's cold and wet out, I'm off work, I can't ride, and I have no work to do (or that I can afford to do) on the bikes. So I'm pondering SWIII and the return route home. The outbound will be a direct shot from Dallas to Vegas for a few nights before SWIII, with a night in Albuquerque at the half way point. I want to hit the Grand Canyon on the way home and see a few potential routes.

Looking for insight on riding hwy 9 through Zion National Park to Kanab or taking 59/389 out of Hurricane and 89A/89 south to the park road 64. I'm in no hurry to get home, so scenic and twisties are the priority. I'm open to other suggestions also.

Any insight appreciated.

We looked at going thru 4 corners, HD dealer at Farmington,NM-then up to Durango, across to Taos, then Dalhart to Amarillo to get I-40 back to Arkansas. If any of that works for you. And that's not set in stone--just generally the direction we planned to take to come home. We are going north From AR to I-70 thru Kansas to Denver over the Rockies, then south down the west slope to St. George on the trip out....so we planned a southerly route home.

some of us have discussed going on out to the coast, up HWY 1 for a bit and back out and around ending up buzzing through Sturgis, some making an appearance and some talking about staying for a few days. No real plan though, just talk at this point.

North through Durango-Silverton-Ouray-Montrose and then East on 50 through the Blue Mesa to Salida is a really nice route, I haven't decided if if I'm going to or fro that way but it's definitely on my list of possibilities.

Here is what I have planned, so far, for coming and going.

http://rideplanner.harley-davidson.c...r/share/517124

I plan on going thru Colorado Springs, swinging south by Durango to Farmington, New Mexico, then taking a scenic route thru Northern NM, AZ and southern Utah into St. George.

Heading back, it will be an interstate run up I-15 to I-70 to Denver, then across the oh so scenic Kansas plains.

I've also thrown together a couple of day rides that I plan on doing.

This one is to Hoover Dam and Las Vegas, with a stop at Valley of Fire.

This one is to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, with a return trip thru Zion National Park.

Might give you some ideas.

In theory, Theory and Reality are the same. In reality, they are different.

Riding through Zion on 9 is a cool ride. The ride itself isnt that long through the park, but there is mile long tunnel. There is an admission to the park, even if you're just riding through. If you want to see more of the park you have to park and ride the shuttle, getting on and off as you like. The quickest you can tour the park by shuttle is 90 minutes and I'm assuming thats getting off nowhere. I'm thinking there were talks of some rides during SWIII down to Zion. I rode through last year and regretted not doing the shuttle thing.

Zion and the North Rim of the Grand Canyon are easily doable in the same day. The North Rim is what a park should be like. Less crowded, buffalo roaming around and more rustic. The South Rim has become so commercial it reminds me of the Disneyland of National Parks. Some say the views aren't as grand as they are from the South Rim but I disagree. There are just tree's on the North Rim near the top, but it doesn't distract from the view IMO.

I'd love to check out the Wave area, but apparently if you want to hike it space is very limited but is looks very cool!

If you've got time in Zion, hike the river at least to Wall Street.

Highway 9 through Zion is a definite for SW III. As stated before, it's not that long, so we'll likely have one option that cuts north to Bryce Canyon and one that cuts south to the North Rim. There will also be a ride to/through Vegas and Hoover Dam. There are gonna be more rides than there are days!!

What if the Hokey-Pokey really is what it's all about?
