SW III Trip Planning

I am planning on attending my first Shark Week this year. I'll be leaving Ohio around the 23rd and plan on following Route 66 out of Chicago. For the ride home, I want to take my time and visit some landmarks. I want to see Yellow Stone and Mount Rushmore, but I'd like suggestions from you all about routes and must-see stops. I've got plenty of time and I plan on camping a lot, so camping suggestions will be appreciated.

Your going to love that trip. Jakson Hole is cool. Can stop at the Cowboy Bar and see the antlered arches at the park across the street. When you do the Grand Teton Park loop you have to go from east to west across the Grand Teton Dam. If you dont the Tetons will be in your mirror the whole ride.
Yellowstone Park is great,Old Faithfull,Yellowstone Falls. Mammoth Hot Springs.
The going is real slow through the park, dont be in a hurry.
Dont miss Chief Joeseph Pass and Bear Tooth Pass. Stop at Bone Daddys in Bear Lodge and buy a shirt. They are good ones. The back has a picture of the Bear Tooth Pass on it and it says GET YOUR ASS OVER THE PASS. I got a kick out of that one.

if you're headed by Missoula, let me know when,we live just south of here.maybe we can meet up and ride together?

it's worthwhile to go south on 93 from Missoula, then take 12 from Lolo, and go over Lolo pass, then down the 2 lanes through Idaho,or else follow 93 the whole way there.

Any chance at moving your touring on the back side of SW instead of prior to?

A group of us are planing on taking the slow route home from SW and hitting the left coast and then some of the locations you mentioned including 2 or 3 days in the Sturgis area.

Demize, I plan on taking 2 or more weeks to get back to Ohio. Not planning on Sturgis (not really my type of scene), but I do want to visit the Badlands and some of those areas.

Take in Sturgis either before or after the bike week. There is some fantastic riding around there. You don't need to go downtown to enjoy the location. Deadwood, Rapid City, Mt Rushmore, Keystone, Devils Tower, Spearfish Canyon, Crazy Horse, etc, etc, etc. The state parks in the area are outstanding. JMO.

Moab, Utah--Arches National Park is immediately adjacent and Canyonlands National Park is close. Both will have you digging deep into your bag for more superlatives.

You might consider hitting Yellowstone during the week. I rode the loop through there in July and the traffic was horrendous. There were tons of rental campers driven by people who were clueless and who would stop (holding up traffic) to take a photo of every squirrel and deer they saw. Much of the loop is single lane and the pace was excruciating. The closer you get to Old Faithful, the worse it gets. If you stop to see the geyser, I recommend you bail and get back on the road before it goes off or at least before it stops. Every one of the thousand campers in the parking lot will be trying to leave at the same time when the show is over.

The scenery was breathtaking, but don't be in a hurry! On the few open areas, there are plenty of park police shooting radar.
