Gutting Factory Head Pipes?

I live in Florida and get caught in traffic, stop and go, so the rear cylinder does not shut down for very long. The rear upper exhaust gets hot enough that a couple of times I had to pull over and shut the bike off, it was extremely hot on my right upper leg.

My bike is a 15 Road Glide Special, with stage 1 air breather setup and HD download. The exhaust is factory and I want to keep it that way. I can gut the stock header pipes and leave the rest of the exhaust system stock. How much louder will the exhaust be with it gutted? I believe I will need to install a tuner to ensure the bike does not run too lean. This is all I want to do, as I am happy with the way stock exhaust sounds.

I understand that gutting the exhaust is not hard, as the CAT is in the upper part of the exhaust header, is that correct? Or have I totally misunderstood about gutting the CAT? Also, am I correct in needing a tuner and if so, what are my best options for ease of install and setup on a tuner?

Thanks for any input

I did it on my 15 SG. I actually bought my pipe gutted off eBay. Super cheap, and the only downtime was the pipe swap. You will definitely want a tuner. FP3 is the best and easiest in my opinion. Huge reduction in heat, better sound. You won't regret it if you do it.

I have stock head pipes that have no cat. I like them.

I also bought 12 mm bungs from amazon and relocated the o2 sensor bung locations further up the head pipe.

I have the stock air cleaner, but if you go with an open air cleaner you will need a fuel management system.

It'll be louder, but it also depends on the mufflers you have.

A relatively cheap option is the American Custom Exhaust PowerFlex headpipe Harley Header pipes

Its a couple of hundred and you keep the factory headpipe(in case something happens and you need it) and uses the factory heat shields. Its not full blown obnoxious, but it gives a nice bark when you jump on it.

15 RGS Vivid Black. Lots of Black stuff cause we all know Black is the fastest color. Custom Dynamics turn signals and PlasmaRods.
A.C.E. powerflex headpipes, and a better than stock stereo.

I'll bet the factory download was the bigger culprit. I had that don't on my 05 and it ran so hot my pipes turned orange.

I have a gutted headpipe on my 16. But I didn't do that for heat. I did it for sound. I put the VH FP3 on my bike before any exhaust mods and it cooled it right down. Also changed the throttle response. What a difference.

I just recently swapped out my stock intake for the heavy breather. So I ran the open cat with the CVO mufflers with the 2" fullsac baffles for about 8000 miles with a stock air cleaner. I had an occasional pop on decel which is completely gone with the new intake.
