So little and such a PIA!

Okay how is it something so little can be such a PIA to change out? Decided today to remove the straight grease fitting on the steering head to a 90 degree for easier access. Got the old one off without any problem. Spent way to long trying to install the new. Holly shit Bat Man! Do you think the access could be any smaller to do this?! Finally gave up and decided to wait for another day. I only hope I find a less difficult way to do this - otherwise bases on my first attempt it could be a long time. Anyone else done this? Advice appreciated!

Garage
It is a snug fit , mine has a sheath of wires dead center of the grease fitting , I just put a longer hose on the grease gun , and I have to run it from underneath ..

Tour Glides had much more room there

Why not just put a 90 degree fitting on the grease gun and not jack with the fitting on the neck?

I should have done that do doubt. I will give it another try today and if this attempt does not work I put the original fitting back on and take your advice.
Ride safe and thanks for the option.

I changed mine back in 08 and it was a PIA. It has been a while but I think I installed a 45 degree zerk fitting and I aimed it forward towards the front of the bike. That way I just grease the steering neck when I have the outer fairing off and the fitting is real easy to get to, I just have to push aside some wires. You only have to grease the steering head bearing every 10,000 miles according to the service manual and with the outer fairing being so easy to remove/install it just made sense to do it this way, besides I have the outer fairing off at least 10 times or more a year.

On my third RG or RGU. Try this cover the tank well.
Turn bars all the way to the right. put tip in your left hand one finger extended. reach in and run finger between wire harness until you feel the zerk stick it on and pump. Much easier than trying from below.
Make sure it is the zerk the is a bolt stud in that area.
