Octane "would you rather" post. #deadhorse

Here's my dilemma: supposed to use 91 minimum on my 2012 fltrx. So around here the only non-ethanol fuel is 87. To go up to 91 I have to run sugar gas. I hate sugar gas.

So what would YOU do?....

I'd use the 87 and throw a bottle of octane boost in.

What if the Hokey-Pokey really is what it's all about?

Any suggestions on octane boosters?

I agree. I don't think it matters what brand you use. Might also want to use a little Lucas upper cylinder oil with it. I use both in mine every fill up and it stopped the pinging, even with 91 octane.

I know many of the victims like you on the forum recommend seafoam. Lucas also has a good reputation. Can't speak from experience, though. I have heard to make sure it's in an opaque bottle because UV rays can break the booster down. Like beer, I guess.

I like getting 5 to 10 gallons of VP racing fuel 1:4 ratio in the tank with 87 octane .... And I love the smell of burnt VP it reminds me if the racing days

Would an ECM flash for a richer fuel/air mixture help with pinging?

Your hatred of "sugar gas" is interesting. Not sure why the contempt. But I would weigh that against running lower octane and possibly f***ing up my bike. Is the "sugar gas" compound going to do damage? Octane boosters don't do a whole lot from what I have researched. If it were me, I would look at whether the gas (sugar) available would really screw up your engine. If not, I would just use it (hatred or not). Huge difference between 91 and 87, and most octane boosters won't even get you close (I think there are threads on this forum regarding that, but I am pretty sure that that the boosters will only add a couple of points, and there are possible downsides to them).

Once I make up my mind, I'm full of indecision.

Okay; did some quick on line research. "Sugar gas" is just ethanol, right? What's the problem? Am I missing something?

up north here we ride skidoos in the off season and ethenol brakes down the rubber compounds on our carb boots so we try to stay away from it whenever possible. i believe boaters dont use it either for some reason
