When to switch to synthetic?

O.K., another dumb oil question. I'm coming up on my 5k service and feel after reading some of the forum post's that switching from petroleum oil over to synthetic could benefit my '13 RGU. After speaking to an Indy wrench, he stated it would be more beneficial to the top end of the engine to stay with petroleum for at least 8-10k miles. I might add that this is the first new Harley I've owned. All others were used and already running synthetic. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

You can run synthetic anytime. I started putting in the synthetic after my 1k service and havent looked back since. Im pretty sure the indy said that because new motors need time to break in if you will but again i wouldnt worry about it since you already have miles on it

When to switch to synthetic

I switched at the first oil change(1,000 miles) and the dealer did the switch as the first oil change was on them. They did not indicate that it would be an issue. My bike is a 09, so maybe the newer bikes would be different. You could look at your owners manual to see if it states what should be done. There are many on here that are more knowledgeable than I and do engines for a living, so I am sure others will speak up.

At 1K I went with Red Line Shock Proof
Ran HD Dino until 5K & changed to Red Line 20/50W
I tried Red Line Primary & but clutch started to slip & then went back to HD Formula+ & have not had anymore problems.
There are many good Syns out there. Here is why I like Red Line:

Changed to synthetic at 1000 miles - if I had to do it again, I would do exactly the same thing.

The day I bought the bike I had the dealer change the oil. Been running nothing but AMSOIL in my bikes for the past 20 years and have never had a problem.

You can put in synthetic the day it rolls off the saaembly line or never switch. Motor wont know the difference but your wallet may. Use whatever oil tickles your fancy. As long as its the proper grade and you change it regularly your motor will give you thousands of trouble free miles.

2011 RGU with more money then sence in it.
Oh and its black because blacks faster.

Changed from dino to synthetic at 1k miles..
I'm at 72k miles with no engine issues....
Change oil and filter every 5k miles and enjoy the ride.
