10k mile Primary oil change question

I just drained my primary 8500 miles on the bike. the oil looked beat to shit with plenty of fragments on the drain plug magnet, glad I didnt wait till 10k like the manual says. it was last done at 1k by dealer. Its my first Harley and first primary oil change so I have nothing to guage what the oil should look like at the stated mileage. So Im asking... what should the oil look like at the stated mileage?. Thanks, DMAXX.

It's oil. It's going to have contaminants in it. I change mine every 10k and yeah it looks bad but I've changed it at 3k and it'd look bad. If you're overly concerned send a sample to blackstone labs and have it analyzed. I'd just step the intervals to 5k and ride on.

I change mine every 5k and it always looks like doo doo. I don't get near as many metal fragments on the drain plug now as I did when it was new. With the primary chain and compensator there's a lot of metal parts wearing and making filth of things.

I change all the oils at every 5K. You can't go wrong!

Yep the oil can get a bit dirty. Most of what you are seeing is clutch plate material in the primary oil. The primary oil contaminants don't affect the life of the parts as much as the contaminants in the engine oil, that is why there is a 10,000 mile oil change schedule on the primary.
I do know that my tranny oil comes out as clean as when I put it in after 10,000 miles.

I change mine every 5k. I order Amsoil a case at a time and get it cheap, so it makes it easy to just dump all 3 at the same time.

You should see less fragments next time,... Just make sure you are keeping the RPMs up proper,... (3000 rpms give or take low gears can be less, but 3000 is the good mark) I ride a lot in 5th at 3200 to 3400. And be sure you put in 38oz. In the primary,... The manual says 32oz - don't know why.

What's the RPM got to do with the colour of the oil?
