Blue dye in Harley oils?

Today my manager, (college educated mechanical engineer) said that when he worked at Harley, '10-'11 timeframe, they were adding blue dye to their oils. The thing with that he said, was so they can see if it is in the engine when the engine fails. If it ain't there, they will fight you on the warranty.

I'm going Huh?? Well they can probably fight you on anything but M-Moss act pretty much says that the oil has to be the cause of the failure, and these days, pretty much all oil is good, just some more good than others.

So can anybody confirm or deny that the HD oils are blue? And if so, how in the world would they tell it from the other blue blends? Mine was light brown in all three holes when I bought it a year ago, so I am suspicious of this.

I never saw a wild thing feel sorry for itself.--DH Lawerence

I have both had services done at a HD dealer as well as bought oils from them and I have never seen blue oil from them. I smell something fishy...

A boat motor company tried this years ago (Evinrude ?) where they put a blue dye in their oil, it left a marker on computer when serviced. They tried same threats. I'm guessing that is what the blue oil is all about

Only blue oil I know of is Valvoline VR1 20w-50 ..

Seems there was a case that went to court over not using a product recommended by the OEM in a warranty claim .. the court ruled that under M-M , if a manufacturer 'required' a specific product to be used for the warranty to be honored , then the manufacturer , for the length of the warranty period , had to provide the required product to the consumer at no cost ..

In the case of oil , they would have to provide you free oil and filters .. and if they changed it , they could not charge you for the service ..

However if there was an engine failure , how can you be sure the OEM would be honest and forthcoming in their assessment and how can you be sure , if they allowed a third party to look at the engine , that they would be looking at your parts ?

I seriously doubt it. Like Bagger said, as long as you use an oil that meets the Harley specified standards, they can't deny an oil based claim. Personally I run Mobil 1 V-Twin 20w-50 and do all my own servicing. I also keep all my receipts for the oil and write the date and mileage on them that I did the oil change. I do use Harley oil filters and do the same with that receipt.

I've heard of adding a dye to determine where an oil leak is coming from

Oil may be different colors going in, but it's pretty much all the same color coming out.

Those 'Crazy Bastards' at Harley. I heard they were 'color blind'! That's why I use RedLine!

My valvoline vr1synthetic racing oil is a cool blue but have not seen any others. Besides the blue the oil seems to quiet the valvetrain down nicely.

I picked up a quart of Syn3 at Badlands H-D to use while on vacation last week. It was not blue, just that clear gold color that most oil seems to be.
