I'm a sucker for an oil thread and have no advice to give (lol), except that I will NEVER use HD oil again.. however, I had some left from a previous oil change and used HD oil for the flush. I had HD oil in primary in my 2016 RGU and it made a racket when shifting.. put in a different brand of syn, noise is all but gone.

same here..put belray in tranny and clunk almost gone ..smooth shifts...did synthetic oil in my engine cause more lifter noise and cause me to loose a few pounds of oil pressure ?

I cannot say for sure.. I always use synthetic and never had the lifter noises going on.. I have always heard that when you use one type of oil initially that you should stick with it because the seals and rings and what not are accustomed to that type oil and changing it up can cause issues.. that makes sense to me but seems strange as well. I was also told when you get a new bike do NOT baby it during the "break in" period because the rings get used to lower pressure and won't react well when you actually start riding the bike the way you want to.. who the hell knows...

Synthetic is not the problem, the brand is, run a good oil like amsoil or redline which i use way better off, also i dont run synthetic in the primary, iuse regular formula plus on the recomm of the mechanic where i bought my bike, and he build engines for people across the country.

When all else fails, hell there is always beer!

I put conventional 20w50 back in it..picked up 5 to 7 lbs. Oil pressure hot at idle and 2000 rpms..tad less lifter chatter..back to where I was before the synthetic oil change..I have no doubt in my mind that good oil which I like mobil 1...ran it in all my previous bikes and it works really well. .I'm on the fence about thus..synthetic oil will protect better at extremely hot temps. Such as traffic at bike week..this is why I went with synthetic to start with. ..should I run the synthetic oil and just not worry about the issues...I have good oil pressure 15lbs. At idle when extremely hot..about 28 to 30 at 2000 rpms. Extremely hot..the part I hate is the lifter chatter..the service manager fired up 3 different bikes with the 103 engine and they all had chatter. .it's just that engine..I hate hearing it..anything I can do to quieten it is what common sense is telling me..but..better protection with synthetic oil at hot temps. Such as sitting in traffic. .some of you guys that know about this lifter chatter and synthetic oil please tell me your opinion on this issue please. .guess I should have mentioned I'm OCD as well.

I live in la. it gets hotter than satan's ballsack here. started running redline 20w-60 when on a previous bike, it looked like my oil pressure was about 4 psi at 2k rpm. freaked me out. the redline keeps much better oil pressure.

for the chatter, try looking into a set of rockouts. makes a world of difference for most folks. only been a small handful where they had other noise which these did nothing for. and they're very cheap, if they don't work, you aren't out much.

I understand the concept of reality, but find it too confining for a way of life.

We're sitting on air cooled, push rod motors with antique technology. I would be nervous if there wasn't any clicking and tapping, lol. Ride it and put whatever oil makes you feel good, clean oil is the way to go!
