M-8 trans leak

I got home from an 8000 mile trip coast to coast. I now have over 14000 miles on my 17 FLTRU. I happened to be reading post on another web sight and came across a issue about M-8 transmissions "leaking" trans fluid into the primary. I checked my fluid level in the Trans and it didn't show on the dipstick. I dropped the bike off at the Dealer I bought it from and the service writer wouldn't write the trans complaint down on the work order even though I questioned him twice about it. When I picked up the bike I asked him about the leak and he told me it was full and needed no attention. I went home and I drained the Trans and only got out 22oz. I drained the Primary and got out 42 oz. Since HD won't acknowledge the problem I have to treat it as a maintenance issue. I'm using a synthetic oil that can be used in all three holes and if my trans level goes down I can drain a little out of the primary and top off the trans with fresh oil. I hope HD will come out with a fix, this could get "messy".

That is total BS. I'd be right back in there asking WTF?

I slammed the service dept on a "were you happy with your service?" call. Hope to talk to the owner of the dealer.

I apologize if I am reading this wrong, but your post makes it sound like you didn't check your fluid levels for over 8000 miles. I wouldn't even do this on my Japanese bikes. Of course, the Japanese bikes have sight glass so you just pull the bike level and check that there is oil in the sight glass.

I only have 3000 miles on my M8 RK, but no fluid level changes in the 2000 miles since I performed the 1000 mile service. I check my fluids weekly or at 500 miles, whichever comes first. I had thought about trading it for a RK special in olive green, but knowing I have a good one makes it hard to take the risk on a trade.

Questions: What did the service writer write down for the technicians to check?

Did you check the fluid levels in front of them when they brought the bike back out to you?

Just because your dealership is jerking you around doesn't mean that Harley is ignoring the problem. Just means you have a sucky dealer. I would call Harley customer service and explain about more fluid drained from the primary than was put in, and low fluid in the trans, then if they say you don't have a problem, then you can say that Harley is ignoring the problem.

I would think that the protocol would be to put a dye in the trans and see where it migrates to.

Your right, In the first 6300 miles I checked the fluids religiously and never saw anything amiss. No trans fluid missing as the other 7 Harleys I've owned in the last 17 years. No oil on the ground and no noise coming from the Trans. I doubt that since there was 22 oz in the Trans that there was anything broken. The other problem I had was a tappet noise on morning start up. a LOUD noise. I also did an oil change in Sacramento and was 1/2 qt low upon dropping the oil I got all 4 qts out of the engine. Between the "missing" oil and the tappet noise I wanted them to check that out. All I got from the "tech" was a lecture that HD would cancel my warranty if I used synthetic in my engine. He told me it would cause "bearing skid". That was debunked years ago. But I purposely didn't want to include that in the post because I still don't know what caused it. I seems to be ok now that I'm back in Florida.

I would have asked the guy what oil is recommended and what oil came in the bike. If he said anything but syn3, I would have asked him if he knows anything about Harley touring bikes.
