Closed loop?

I'm researching means to richen my AFR a bit and keep coming across the terms "closed loop" and "open loop." Can somebody explain that to me please? Thanks.

Ok I can give you the long version or the short version.

Let's do the shot version because I have beer to drink hahahahahahaha.

Basically when you are in open loop the computer uses a "map" to set the fuel ratios. This map is preset. When you are in closed loop the computer uses the o2 sensors. The o2 sensors tell the computer what ratios the engine is running and the computer makes the adjustments to the fuel.

Both. Just about all fuel injection engines are. Basically anything with a o2 sensor.

Runs in open loop until the O2 sensors heat up and become active, then goes into closed loop operation

Your bike has both closed and open loop function. The closed loop functions when at idle to about 40 percent throttle load and uses info from oxygen sensors to maintain an EPA approved fuel ratio. When you open throttle further and motor works harder it goes to open loop settings disregarding the oxygen sensor information and uses preset fuel maps to determine how much fuel is supplied at a given throttle position. This is called open loop because the ECM actually opens the information loop by dropping the o2 information.

Okay, I think I'm tracking...so with all this knowledge at hand, is the VIED a good option for my goals, which are, to basically run a little cooler, provide adjusted AFR for a set of high-flow slip ons, and a SE air cleaner? I don't plan on any mods beyond that. I got the slip ons for the sound and the SE/AC because I like the look. Better performance is a bonus. With my modest mods is the XIED more appropriate? It's only a few bucks difference, I just want the better application. I'm thinking a full blown tuner is overkill for my needs. Thanks y'all.

Another way to think about it is when you are cruising or taking it easy you are in closed loop and the computer tries to optimize your efficiency /mpg / decreased emission. It adjust your AFR to maintain as close to I believe 14.6 as it can.

When you are running hard, full acceleration etc all bets are off and the bike goes into open loop.

You can tailor your Open loop to either get better mpg or more hp or try to get a balance between the two.

If you dont plan on other mods then yes, the FL-VIEDs are an affordable, very viable option.
