Sell me on Thundermax...

I am ready to pop for a tuner and have studied the Thundermax as well as others..

There is not really a lot of feedback on this tuner compared to say Powervision or ...well Powervision. Seems that's the tuner of choice these days.

I get ready to pull the trigger on a T-max then I read something that says its old technology and a step backward, then I read an article that says its by for the best tuner on the market.

Stage 1 in process right now with some audio mods...might do cams in the future or other engine mods , not sure but I do not want to buy 2 tuners if I decide to.

Why am I buying a Thundermax...? All you satisfied customers tell me your thoughts...good or bad.

Thanks

I like mine. I'm a set it and forget it type so it works for me. You can tinker with the settings if you want, but I'll screw it up so I let it do it's thing. I think the power vision is more for those that like playing with the settings and fine tuning the tune. The downside is once you sync the PV to your bike it's married to it forever. You cannot sell it to someone else if you want to go another direction later.

The tech support at Zippers is real good too!

I want something that I can "tweak" if necessary......I like the fact that the T-max has wideband Auto tune and is basically a "set and forget" type unit. Everytime I get ready to buy one , I read something that pulls me away.

To start with a true "Auto Tuner" will only auto tune the AFR it will not auto tune timing.
A Power Vision in not a auto tuner unless you buy for extra $$$ the Power Vision PRO. The Power Vision is a reflash module that piggy backs to the factory ECM. Look at all the wiring involved in the Power Vision Pro too.

The T-Max replaces your factory ECM (no piggy backing) and uses all the stock wiring on your bike except for the O2 wiring harness so it is a clean application. You do not have to purchase extra equipment to have the Auto Tune it is all included.
You can make (tweak) AFR adjustment if you want and (tweak) timing adjustment if needed by linking your PC to the T-Max module.
You can store and access up to 5 tuning maps on T-Max module for your use which can be changed without linking up the PC.

I got mine from Frank at Dragos and that is the tuner that he recommends and he has good prices on the T-Max too, so give Frank a call.

This is not totally true, Power vision is a auto tuner as well out of the box, and it also can house multiple maps. You dont need a computer to change it and it offers a set of guages as well if you wanted to mount it. Out of the box there is only 1 cable thats it.. There isnt that many more wires than the tmax if you wanted to do a closed loop system (auto tune module). There is alot of versitility in the Power Vision..

Load the map disconnect and be done it doesnt stay connect to the bike unless you are doing a tuning session or you run the full auto tune module.

The Power Vision can not auto tune the AFR any more then the stock ECM can with the stock O2 sensors. A "True" auto tuner needs the 18mm closed loop O2 sensors such as the ones that Power Vision sell in the PRO package or comes with the T-Max. If the Power Vision could auto tune with the stock O2 sensor WHY would they offer a PRO auto tune package at a extra cost?
You don't need the computer to change the stored maps with the T-Max either.

I really like my T-max,been no problems,I just put it on and let it do it's thing.Saved me the cost of a dyno, plus I don't have to trust some guy at a dealership to get it right.I got a really good price on mine from Direct cycle parts, one of the sponsors here.

I'm thinking about changing cams, and when I do,it's nice to know I wont have to screw around trying to haul the bike to someone to tune it.

I've need no tech support of any kind since I put it on,and it's nice to know it adjusts to changing altitude and conditions.

The ECM can alter but it really doesnt tune there the Power Vision can, the only difference between the basic and the full autotune is the full can manage a much wider ranger of afr settings. So if you are going to do anything up to cams basic is ok and thing more than that the autotune becomes obsolete. Also Auto tune isnt really auto tune, as you ride it doesnt change your tune on the fly. You run autotune ride and then save and import. I used this when I first got my cams and it worked great, after 4 runs I was dialed in with 2 tunes. One for racing and one for cruising...

They would they offer protune it is easy some people never do more then pipes and air where the basic auto tune would be fine, if you do more you can purchase the pro autotune to expand the ability they are adjust the AFR (10:1-18:1). Problem here is you are not comparing like for like packages which you are just confuing the subject.

Why spend the extra 300+ for autotune if you dont need it?

So to answer the OP question, Choice is simple Tmax very common alot of people like it and use it. Power Commander 5 w/autotune will autotune on the fly and you can turn it on and off as you see fit. Also very popular with tuners. powervision I found alot of tuners dont use it because it isnt as user friendly..

Best option for you is wherever you get your work done at find out what they recommand and they use and go with that. Now if you want to fiddle and play with it and have a cool screen to look at guages and codes on the fly then power vision is a great choice. Also with the power vision you can use power commander tunes with it..

Either way you cant go wrong with either both are good systems..

I'm running the T-max and I got instant smoothness and response the minute I installed it. I have yet to dial it in to it's maximum potential, but a lot of folks are telling me it'll set itself. It was worth the cash as far as I'm concerned.
