TTS experts - merging fuel tables and VE tables from 2 tunes

question for the TTS experts. i have 2 TTS files from 2 different tunes. first one was when my bike had intake, exhaust, SE 254E cams. second one was done after i changed pipe, bumped compression (10.39 static, 9.46 corrected, 197 ccp), had heads worked, and added dragos 580 cam.

the problem is the second tune is pretty horrible. it was done by a supposedly well respected tuner in orange county, but i can say without reserve all he did was do a bunch of vtune runs. he def didn't tune each cylinder or do any advanced fuel or spark tables. the warm up steps are horrible, there's a flat spot around 2900-3000, it pings from 2500-3000 in temps above 75 degrees, and it runs horrible at elevation over 3,000'. i know it's lean because i keep throwing O2 sensor codes and i can tell the way it drives. oh yeah and did i mention he heat stained and yellowed my brand new pipe while on the dyno? story for another day, on to the question...

could i take the fuel map from my first tune (which ran great) and apply it to the fuel map in the current tune, then reload it? i looked at the fuel map in the second tune and most of it is closed loop and lean. i think if i can get the fuel right it would run much better until i can get it tuned by a real tuner again.

would appreciate it if anyone has any insight. also, i'm not crazy to think a bike with under 200 ccp shouldn't ping after being tuned by a good tuner, no?

Any luck with getting a tune going on your Bike? Here is what I know from reading and using TTS on my '08.
1. Since you have engine changes between the 2 files, I would say its not worth trying to combine them.
2. There are some other forums with some very knowledgable TTS folks, pm me if you want to know unless its ok to post them here.
3. Make sure you update the TTS software, they have put several new updates out this year.
4. Find a map file thats close to what you have, load it and do the Vtunes yourself, its fairly straight forward and you get to ride.

I'm not a tuner so not sure what the difference is but when collecting data there is a choice between Vtune data or Dyno data. Not sure if that is why your current tune is out of whack.

As frydaddy states, I would not think about combining the tunes. You can run your bike in the auto tune mode and the TTS will make some changes for you. It sucks when you spend several hundred dollars for a tune and its awful. I had the same issue with Ben's V Twin in /charlotte but fortunately Doc's performance got me all straightened out.

If you have a road trip to Florida, Doc can get you squared away. Also Frank from Dragos may be able to give you some suggestions.

Enjoy the Ride!

thanks for the replies all...i did end up getting it fixed by going up to RC cycles and letting bob tune it. no more ping, all gears and rpm usable in all conditions, smooth power delivery all the way through. took it on a 2k mile ride after the tune to verify

the original tuner in orange county, while he may not be the worst tuner in the world, is certainly not good for anyone who goes outside what he feels comfortable with. i think he is probably ok if you are working with stuff he knows about and stuff within his limits. outside of that and maybe not so much.

the dragos 580 cam i have has a 42 degree intake close and i've heard cams with that kind of closing need to be in the hands of a good tuner not to ping. heard the same thing about the mackie 590 cam (which also has a 42 degree intake close).

so, after parting with some more cash, i finally have my bike back! bob at RC cycles is a wizard. the tune is so much better.

Sorry to hear about your bad tuning experience in the OC. I can probably guess who your talking about. It's important to find someone that knows how to get the maximum out of the TTS tuner.

I have been using Bob for over 8 years and ride up from So. Cal to have him tune my bikes. I also installed the Drago's 580 cam and Drago 2 2-1 pipe and Bob tuned it.....It runs GREAT!

Glad you have the bike running great again.
