Dealer flash and PV - Get both or ???

So I just went through 10 pages and couldn't find the answer but common sense tells me if I get a tuner I don't need stag 1 done by the dealership since technically the tuner is doing what the dealer would do but only better?

Is my logic correct?

Also, I just got head pipes that are de-catted, I'll be purchasing slip on mufflers and air cleaner and as far as performance items that is all I'm going to do. Is the price for a pv justified or is there another choice that could save me a few bucks?

I'm guessing new bike, so congrats.

You don't need both. Just 1 or the other.

Did my newbie status bleed or scream from my post..lol.

Yes new bike and thank you. First Harley, all previous bikes were crotch rockets so it's nice to be riding an awesome piece of equipment.

haha! A little bit.

I grew up around harleys but use to ride crotch rockets for years with some friends. I think you'll really like the FLTRX. Coming from sport bikes, i'd be surprised if you don't do more engine mods in the future, but I could be wrong.

Congrats on the new bike. There is a lot of knowledge on this forum and I haven't been on long but they seem like a great group. I'll let someone with more technical knowledge advise you on tuners.

I did a stage 1 flash and felt like I wasted my money. Just ordered and received my Power Vision from Fuel Moto, who is most likely who you will be referred to. Or Frank at Dragos, both sponsors on this site. However, I think there are much better options than the stage 1 flash and most will tell you not to waste your money.

I agree, before buying a tuner it would be good to know if you plan on doing more changes to the bike in the future. If you plan on doing more mods, cams, more CI, etc you would do well to get a tuner with auto tune.

The ecm flash offered by the dealer will only make minor changes to the open loop areas of the map. Your much better to use a tuner that will allow you to run a slightly richer fuel mixture in closed loop also, as that is the area of the map most often being used.

+ 1 on do you plan more mods. Did you get head pipes that have both the 18mm & 12mm 02 bungs? If you plan more mods such as cams you may want a Auto Tuner, a auto tuner requires the use of a 18mm 02 sensors which is located close the the cylinder heads, your stock 12mm 02 sensors will not work with a auto tuner but they will work with a regular tuner. If you go with a aftermarket tuner you will not need the dealer flash or the SERT offered by your HD dealer.

I just ordered the stock heads with the cat removed form http://www.wildpigpipes.com/Store1.html

After I decide on some slip ons...Once I figured what I want then I read another thread... (you realize someone could seriously go crazy with all the options) ....and then decide on a air cleaner I have to make it ready for the wife, then stereo, led upgrade. Anything regarding motor may not be for a very long time.

So regarding the pv, for the $500 which is a big chuck, it's really worth it based off what Ive done? I do hate, ABSOLUTELY HATE the low end throttle. putt putt putt then gooooooo.

Like others have said, NO to the flash, IMHO still runs too hot & lean. Beyond that there are a lot of choices from canned maps on low cost tuners to the PV and ThunderMax both with auto tune.

If you'll be happy with a tune after a stage 1 upgrade and never do anything else & don't want to worry with it ever again, go the lower cost route.

If you're gonna tinker and mod and change pipes, cams, heads and such, then PV and Tmax are the ticket and you won't need to dyno, saving a couple bucks skipping that part.
