SEPRT Obsevations

I am wondering if anyone else would like to share their tuning results regarding the Screamin Eagle Pro Race Tuner.

I recently got fed up with how hot my bike was running, and noticed as soon as the weather warmed up and I started wearing my half helmet, I could hear the dreaded marbles rattling around the heads (pinging/knocking) at 2750 - 3000 rpm in 6th gear. That's my normal cruising speed so it's annoying as hell! And forget about it if I got caught in stop & go traffic, the engine felt like a blast furnace!

A little back story to make a long post longer: The bike is a 2011, 103 Ultra. Modifications made were the addition of the Jackpot 2-1-2 header and the K&N breather/filter kit. Stock mufflers. Local H-D franchise suggested I buy the SEPRT VCI module and have them "Smart Tune" the bike to set it up correctly. So I did that. They stopped the popping on deceleration, so I thought they did a correct tune. NOT! Turns out they just used a canned flash and let it go at that! They don't have a dyno, so no real "tuning" happened.

I purchased the software and the cable kit along with the training DVD and wound up uploading the tune the dealer did from the VCI. Looking over it, I noticed two glaring errors. 1) My Heat Management was left OFF! 2) my rev limit was set to 7000 rpm! WTF? No wonder the engine felt like a blast furnace in traffic jams!

Using the tables from the VCI tune-up, I decreased the AFR by 0.3 (increasing fuel) in the rev range I had problems with, and I retarded the timing front & rear by 2 degrees in the 2500 - 3000 rpm range. I made sure the Heat Management was turned ON, and reduced my rev limit to 6000 rpm, and also made sure automatic compression release was activated.

Results: Operating oil temperature has dropped more than 20 degrees, from as high as 269 degrees before to a high so far of 244 degrees. I check the oil temp when I get off the bike using my digital oil dipstick. My fuel consumption seems to be the same, still averaging 43 to 45 mpg on a tank. Only two tanks since the change. The bike also starts from a standing start better, seat of pants dyno says its pulling stronger. Got stuck in another traffic jam and the engine started running rough, I figured that must be the rear cylinder cutting out for heat management, so that is working too!

That's all I've got for now, anyone who would like to share, please do.

Do you know what your actual air/fuel ratio is? I just bought a tuner with a gauge and closed loop so I know whats going on... Can not tell you how it works yet, I have read so many posts like yours it kind of steered me that direction. In my opinion I would not tamper with the timing... HD is already having you run premium fuel for a reason... if they could could safely give you more timing advance they likely would. I have seen damage from pre-ignition not heard with loud pipes... It's NOT a pretty sight.

Hi Slowguy,

I know the AFR is 14 to 14.3 in the working ranges of rpm and manifold pressure ranges of 6% TO 25% throttle. It was very lean in those ranges at around 14.4 before I made any changes.

As per the timing adjustment, I am not advancing the timing, that would be bad. Pre-detonation is caused by timing that is too far advanced. Harley has these things tuned to run at EPA standards, and they are far too lean. I've retarded the timing just a tad, only 2 degrees, it took care of my pre-detonation problems. If you can print out a chart of your Fuel to air ratios, you will be able to see where it it lean and tune it better. Just a thought.

Hey Scoop, I'm not having a problem, I'm actually in the process of installing a tuner myself I considered the screaming eagle race tuner and several others. I wanted something able to run close loop and auto adjust mixture. The one I choose has a gauge that you can monitor while riding it replaces the air temp gauge. I can not tell you anything about it till I finish the install and ride it. I leaned towards the Gen4 for it's simplicity and no need to for computers or other devices... I can tell you they recommend 13:1 to 14:1 in the cruise range for best performance for lightly modified motors one can pull over and adjust it in seconds to 15:1 for best fuel economy....what a novel concept that is yet to tested by myself.

Full throttle they recommend 12.5:1-13:1
Acceleration from cruise 12:1
Idle and light cruise they suggest 13.5:1 however they say the industry standard is 14.7:1

I thought maybe those ratios could help you... The gauge would for sure while riding! Sure would beat print outs!

Of course this is a totally different unit... The jury is still out if I can give it a thumbs up yet should know next week I need to have the wide band 02 bungs installed.

I'm running lean also. I suspect mine had a canned tune dumped by the dealer when they did the exhaust for the original owner. My dealer wants 3 hours to really get into and perfect it.




I've thought about going the route you did and working on it myself though.

I think 3 hours is a little excessive don't you? Unless they are doing several "Smart Tune" runs it shouldn't take that long. I spent that much time reading the manuals and learning how to use the software.

So far, I'm happy with my results, sure, it's not perfect, but my gas mileage is still within range of what it always was, the bike runs cooler, and it doesn't knock/ping. Software cost $39.95, Cable cost $45.95, Training DVD $39.94, satisfaction of doing it myself, Priceless! Still less expensive than Dealer 3 hours @ $95.00/hour.

Getting 46.3 mpg with this new tune. Very very happy. Not lean anymore, just running right.

In my opinion for what it is worth ...I think many people take the 14.7 as the optimal range to gospel. And that would be correct IF we were all running 100% pure gasoline. However, Ethanol, has a much lower number and when we are mostly running 10% ethanol it brings that 14.7 down to 14.1 according to my math. (take it for what its worth, I am not a mechanic or tuner but I did stay at a Holiday Inn once)

I have all of mine between 13.0 to 14.0. If it is higher than that I can really feel the heat increase when idling and the time it take to cool down when I get home.

Lambda based systems are fuel independent. Not sure if SEPRT is Lambda based or AFR. TTS tuner supports Lamdba maybe Harleys tuner doesn't...
