Give me your thoughts please

Here's what I need your input on.

I have Rinehart 4" slip-ons and the SE Ventilator AC that I'm going to install. Why that combination, simple, I want better sound from the pipes and I want it to breath better than stock. That's it...that's all I care about. I've gone the full custom route before in both looks and engine and I'm over that...just want to RIDE!

But, I know (I assume) that means re-mapping. If I EVER do engine work it's YEARS down the road, probably when I do a total rebuild. Why no engine work now...Like a post I read from the wise BDMastiff...when you mess with the engine chit happens! I've been that route...and now I just want to RIDE and have it run consistently good. I'm planning a cross-country ride later this year and it has to be dependable.

So, here's the bottom line... if I just want to put on the slip-ons and AC what's my best option? Should I just have the dealer re-map the stock ECU? Should I have them put on the SERT and re-map it? Or what? I really don't even care about mileage or increased torque/hp, my 103 gives me all I care about...just want it running good and to be as reliable as possible.

What year is your bike? I assume a 2010 or 2011.
A reflash of the ECU may be all that is needed, but with the open Air Cleaner, and the stock head pipes, the bike is gonna run lean without a tuner(SERT, PCV Etc). The stock bikes run lean and hot from the factory, and when you change the air cleaner, the lean condition and heat will increase.

It's a 2011 RG Custom with the 103.

I just bought a PCV from fuel moto. $311.95 shipped. I also have Rineharts and a/c. They re-mapped it for my set-up. All I have to do is install it. Just came today.

Hi "G" I had the same thoughts as you and I was worried about doing anything other than a stage 1 remap because of the dealers saying it could void my warranty. After remap from the dealer I was getting some popping because it is still running to lean. I have true duals and monster rounds with the Ventalator AC and I use the EFI from Dobek. Similar route i went with. First I changed to the SE nightstick, and left everything else stock. no re flash or tuner. I also purchased a Ness AC but was concerned with the bike running leaner than it is already is and didnt want any issues on my trip to Sturgis, so i waited to install it. Rode to Sturgis and back( about 3000 miles total) and the bike ran great. It ran hot, but it ran fine. i noticed my head pipes turned nice and brown and blue which indicated running lean. This is stock.
So i decided to purchase a PCV from Fuel moto with a new fuel map to adjust for my Ness AC. installed the Ness AC, and PCV with new map, and the bike ran great, but still hot. I felt like I lost a little on the low end too, so i tried another map from Fuel Moto which was a cooling map( runs richer) and that solved the heat for the most part. I knew that the heat and low end power lost was coming from the restrictive head pipes with the Cats in them. now having more air flow, but still restrictive pipes. So i saved my $ up and ordered the Rinehart xtreme 2-1. i knew I wanted a full exhaust system when I bought the bike so I purchased parts that would allow for any future changes. i havent rode the bike yet as I installed the Rineharts this winter, but got a new map from Fuel moto for this exhaust and looking forward to a cool running bike and having a little more oomph and sound!
I guess Im suggesting buying a tuner to compensate for the new free flowing AC. An exhaust change alone will not require a new map (tuner), but the AC does.

To answer your question and this is according to the mechs that did my bike. No work is needed if your just changing to slipon's. Changing to a free flowing AC, it is recommended that you have the ECU remapped. From experience there really isn't much change in that remapping.

The big queston is going to be the heat from the pipes you will experiance in the summer. Some people are okay with it, allot are not. The cat's being in the pipes on the right side behind your feet do get hot. PCV's or other tuner's will help some, but in the end, it's up to you as to weather to stick with Stock head pipes with Cat's in them.

I have Rinehart slip-ons, and the Harley Stage 1 intake. I got my PCV from who knows where, but I know I paid less than $300.00 for it. Bike runs really nice now, no popping just more power.

I emailed the PCV support guys, told them what I had and asked them which map to use. They responded before I even got the PCV. The one I am using keeps the standard rev limiter settings. Given the way I shift, that is probably the better way to go, for now.

In theory, Theory and Reality are the same. In reality, they are different.
