I'm thinking same thing. I use iPhone for GPS in car and use the free Waze app. You can keep it simple and use the native Maps app, but wont get audibles directions or traffic alerts like you get with Waze. Plan to use same app but still havent yet decided exactly which mounting approach I like best.

I have used motion x gps a little bit. You can have voice guidance for I think about $10 a year. It has a nice display of what is coming next in the firm of a yellow square and a count down bar that shows up when you get near you next turn. This is while in landscape mode ( this is when your iphone is turned sideways like in the iron aces mount) with the navigate option activated. This app will also reroute you.

I use GPS Drive motionX app on my iron aces mount. I paid the 9.99 for voice and works great because the voice come over the radio (iron ace Iphone connection). i haven't had any problems viewing. You do have to lock it into landscape mode otherwise every little turn kept flipping the screen. Simple setting fix.
Like i said, I haven't had any problems with it.

My experience is that it doesn't work as well as a dedicated GPS.

I use the Navigon app, they were bought out by Garmin its just like a dedicated GPS device, all the maps are downloaded (you can select if you don't want them all) so you don't need the cellular data connection to navigate. Turn by Turn, voice guidance etc. its great. Its not a cheap app but its great.

I have been using the iPhone as a dedicated gps on my bikes for a long time now. I have the phone in an otterbox case which makes it resistant to water, dust, etc... I removed the clip from the otterbox holster and mounted this onto the iron aces mount on my Road Glide. I have the different setup for the iPhone on my Ultra.

I also use the Navigon software, it's light years better than any factory or Garmin GPS that I have ever used. Graphics are great, lane assist, search, traffic, weather, etc... With my iPhone in front of me I can also see important calls, texts, check the weather, etc... If I plug it into the aux in port on the radio, I can have the nav prompts come through the radio, use it as an iPod and even listen to Pandora or Sirius or whatever I have an App for. When I get to where I'm going I pop it off and stick it in my pocket.

After using this setup for a couple of years and having used dedicated Garmin setups in the past I would honestly never go back.

This is all good reading. I'm trying to justify upgrading to iphone vs zumo 660. But with the phone comes a higher bill for me every month.

+1 for using the Iphone and Navigon App. The only time the GPS got confused so far is within new roads still under construction. Definitely works better than the Tom Tom that nows sits in a drawer.
