GPS vs Iphone

I have both an Iphone and a zumo 550. Having a hard time deciding on which to use and which way to mount. My thought is sell the zumo and use the $ for other accessories and just use the iphone for gps purpose. but the ruggedness and all weather capability of the zumo is a nice feature. I tried one aftermarket waterproof case for the iphone and a regular garmin but it got too hot inside and shut the unit off. Just looking for some opinions and mounting ideas for my 12RGU.

Thanks in advance.

Iron aces or the HD bar mount. Run power from the glove box. Why put your phone through all that exposure and shock. Might as well use the GPS for its only intended purpose instead of taxing your phone that does other stuff all day. Just my 02cents

Set both units up to find the same address. Drive around in your car (It is easier to stop and check them in a car).
Purposely take wrong turns and see how long they take to recalculate.
Check which is easier to see in the sunlight.
Check which (if either) is water proof.

last time I did this kind of test my Garmin won hands down!

I got a LifeProof case thats waterproof for my IPhone. I ordered the bike mount and that works well for my tunes. I can't use it in the states due to very high roaming costs for data.

I use the Iphone while in my car (when I have to drive it) with the Tom Tom app. I really prefer it to the Garmin. That said, I use the Garmin daily on the bike. There's nothing out there that waterproofs the Iphone and keeps it as easy and convenient to use. The Garmin touch screen also works better with gloves on.

Big bird the life proof case for iPhone is awesome. It is waterproof and rugged but does not hinder operation or add too much size to the phone.

Also remember that the iPhone is not worth much when you don't have cell service. For me, the exact times I really need gps correspond pretty well with times/places with little cell coverage.

Got caught in the rain last night with a Lifeproof case. It got drenched and no water got in. As for cell service, get a gps app with downloadable maps.

I prefer the Garmin over my IPhone for 2 reasons..
1. Larger screen which is easier to see
2. easier to use while moving if needed (larger buttons)

I use the Iron Aces mount and like it
