Live mapping updates?

How is it while traveling up to New Hampshire this past weekend the GPS knew where the construction zones were and which lanes were blocked? Does the GPS have some type of live update capability?

Also while using the navigation to get me to the location when I came up to exits it would put up a screen shot of what the exit was like to help guide me to the proper lanes.

So it got me wondering since I had my phone bluetoothed for music to the bike was the GPS using that connection to acquire data updates?

It all depends on what GPS you have and what services you're subscribed to. My Garmin 590 is linked to my phone for traffic and weather updates; uses my phone's data plan. It also has a built in lane assist as well as junction view for many highway exits.

I should have specified I am referring to the GPS built into the motorcycle. I have the 2015 RGU CVO.

If I am not mistaken the updates and traffic actually come from Sirius satellite you can set it for weather as a background and elevations as well.

don't know about map updates on that unit , but the traffic and construction updates are part of a subscription service , some units even tell or highlight which lane you need to be in when you merge or prepare to exit ..

Sirius Radio is probably doing the updates. I have a 2015 Spc and it has the signage images that you mentioned but it doesn't update for traffic or road conditions.

But I didn't buy the Sirius service for the motorcycle. I acquire Sirius via the app on my phone which is tied to the receiver in my truck which is only for music.

I don't know how it works but it's save me a lot of time getting around traffic and construction.

Totally agree I like how it works. Just has me wondering if it is using the data signal of my phone to get the updates. For me it isn't a problem since I have unlimited data but for those who don't it could be eating up a lot of data without the user knowing it or even putting them into extra expense on the phone.

I am going to do more reading of the book and also playing with options on the bike to try and confirm things over the weekend.

Upon further reading I believe I found the answer. Many of the metropolitan areas have what is called RDS traffic. That is how the GPS can get updates besides using the Sirius traffic reports.
