iPhone for Navigation

For those of you using the iPhone GPS, How is it working for you.

I have a Garmin 478 (marine GPS with turn by turn for highway) but Garmin's map updates have gotten to the point where they won't load due to lack of memory.

So instead of buying a stand alone GPS, I'm looking at going with the IPhone and using the ruggedized, waterproof case.

I'm looking for feedback as to how well it works and whether you have to use Bluetooth for good turn by turn nav. Thanks

I use mine all of the time with the free mapquest app. Works great.

Google maps with turn by turn is now available for the iPhone and seems to work well. I have my phone mounted with the Iron Aces iPhone mount (forum sponsor) and an auxilliary plug into the radio. You can hear the turn by turn directions through the speakers easily. Another great GPS app is DRIVE by MotionX. I think it costs a few dollars and you have to pay extra for turn by turn, but it works great. You can listen to music and it'll lower the volume, give the direction and turn the music back up. Only thing bad about smart phone based GPS that I can see is, no phone signal=no GPS. Sattelite based units (Garmin, etc.) don't have that problem.

I use my IPhone with the Garmin Navigon app paired with the Sena Blutooth headset and it works great. The GPS will do turn by turn and turns down the music and then back up again when it's done navigating.

As for the GPS not working when you lose phone signal I have not found this to be the case. Very few times have I noticed it actually losing its ability to navigate and then it has been very brief. Seems that has happened with every other stand alone GPS i have tried at one time are another.

With the Iron Aces mount it makes for a very clean set up that's easy to remove.

I also use the Motion x on my I-phone with the Iron Aces mount. It works great. The only negative is the waterproofness if it rains.

Use MotionX as well without issues except battery drain.

Thanks, everyone. Looks like I will have to add an app for the turn by turn. Best buy has a waterproof case. I think it's called the Lifesaver. I also saw one on Gearz yesterday that is made of polished aluminum that actually screws together I have to find that one online.
