Whats the best dedicated GPS unit

It seems that many, myself included, are less than overwhelmed by the late 90's technology of the boom GPS software. I love Google maps, but I would like a dedicated big screen water resistant GPS unit that is as simple and intuitive as Google maps. A unit that allows you to set and view routes without requiring a doctorate in computer science to operate. I want to utilize my phone for other uses. Any suggestions on current makes and models.

zumo gps is probably going to meet your needs. The software to plan routes takes awhile to learn but BaseCamp uses the same map as in your GPS, so no surprises when you are on the road.

Does it work like Google Maps on a phone, or do you have to download routes from a computer. I love the Google maps on the phone, it shows you route choices you touch the one you want, hit start route and off you go. I don't know if there is a GPS unit that works this way, does the zumo?

With the Zumo you have the option to define the route but you can also set preferences on the unit itself and avoid downloads. I prefer to set up from the laptop as when going long distances, I like a mix of highways and twisties. If you let the unit decide, you get all highways or all twisties, it does not have a hybrid option.

I love the Zumo 595 and the numerous features that beats using your phone hands down.

Enjoy the Ride!

My Garmin will give me a few choices of routes if I enter a destination. I use my Garmin for longer trips, so I plan my route in Basecamp and then upload to my Garmin.
