13" vs 14.5" Madstad Shield

Happy Spring everyone!

I am on the fence as to what height Madstad shield that would work best for me and the better 1/2. I really like my 12" Windvest, except at highway speeds and of course my GF is real tired of getting beaten up on the back of the bike.

I am 5'8" with a 32" inseam, I had my seat modified so I sit about an inch farther back in the saddle then stock.

Madstad site says I should be a 13" shield. However I noticed some of you keep the shield at its lowest level for looks. With that said Do you think I would get more bang for the buck with a 14.5" Shield?

Thanks.

Ride for the future as it may be closer then you think.

I have a 13 dark smoke. Works great for myself and the wife. I also have a clear 16" that i use when we are knocking out long days 700+ on the interstate. I'm same size as you.

I'm 6'1" and I run the 11" a lot. I would say that the 13" would be just fine for you and your better half.

So I guess an important question that I didn't see asked is how tall is your GF? If she's the one getting beat up, you'll need to address that instead of you. You'll have protection no matter how high/low you go but you want to make sure it'll work for her also.

You're in the same boat as me, but I am torn between the 14.5 and a 16 inch. I also have the RGU with no mods to the seat. I am 6-1 and I find when riding the stock shield is about at the bottom of my chin. Grasshopper backrest keeps me from slouching too much. Wife has had neck issues in the past so wind buffeting is an issue if I want her to ride long distance. When I had my wing I had a Tulsa X-tall windshield. I looked through the windshield and wife loved it as she had virtually no buffeting.

I followed the measurements on the Madstad website, they show a 13 inch shield measured from the top of the radio housing as being 6 inches low and 9 inches at high. My stock shield is just under 9 inches. So I assume 14.5 inch shield would be 7.5 and 10.5 and a 16 inch would be 9 inches and 12 inches?

I am leaning toward erring on the side of caution with the 16 inch clear for now and maybe buying a shorter dark down the road for solo riding.

I am 6' with a 28" inseam (I am the worlds biggest dwarf) so I sit as tall in the saddle as most folks who are 6'4" to 6'6".
I run the 16" shield with old style mount. I have it set about 75% as low as it will go. The top of the shield is about level with my chin, but I can still duck behind it in the rain. This throws the air about 4 to 6" over the top of my head at 70 mph and keeps Momma very happy also.

I'm 6' with a 32" inseam riding on a stock seat on 2013 RGU. Initially started out with a 13" Madstad but swapped it out for a 14.5" I found that with the 13, I had it set almost all the way to the top. I exchanged it just so I would have more flexibility for my passenger. Also depends on your seat and your riding posture, sit up straight or "trying to look cool while slouching". Madstad has an excellent return policy and are very easy to deal with.

I am 5'9". Have a 2006, so the fairing is 1.5" lower than yours. I also have a Mustang Regal touring seat, so I sit a little higher. I have a 14.5" MS. At it's highest position I look through it. At its lowest position, it is lower than the 13 inch WV shield that I have. The WV shield works soooo much better than my old 6 inch KW shield, and the MS just works great for wind management. I guess the 6 inch shield looked the coolest though.
