Jumping back into the MadStad club

I had the 11" very dark MadStad on my 2013 RGC and I really liked it. Then I traded in that bike on a 2013 RGC CVO and found that the stock windshield did a halfway decent job and I liked the look. But after a while the wind noise on the highway started to get to me so I pulled the trigger today on a new one. I went 13" this time and with the light grey, one step from clear. After looking at all the photo threads today I noticed that the clear shields show the 'normal' outline of the fairing quite well since you can see though the MadStad. I couldn't quite make myself go completely clear so split the difference and went with the slight tint. I can always swap it out if I want.

I decided to go with a 13" instead of the 11 I had before and I also asked for the holes to be drilled an inch lower. This will in effect give me a 12" screen position-wise. I ran the 11" all the way down mostly for looks. I'm just under 5'8" and it was fine up to about 75 mph and I generally don't go much faster than that anyway. So now the wait. I'll post back here with photos and review after I get it. I already know the performance and I came to like the look on my last bike and found RG's without a MadStad looked kinda funny. So I assume it will be the same here. The only difference will be how it looks being so much more clear and how that extra couple of inches works. I do wonder if being able to see the robo-brackets so easily will bug me. That was the nice thing about the extra dark one I had.

And then of course how much better I can hear the stereo! Stay tuned...

Looking forward to hearing how you like the lighter tint. I have the 13" dark tint and love the looks and function, but often wonder how I'd like less tint. Can't beat the dark for looks and as you mentioned, hiding the brackets. Post some pics if you can.

I like my dark grey. You look over it so no need to go lighter.

I've been considering one myself. My 10" LRS Mako is OK for putting around on my own and I have a 14.5" one (I cut down a 16"er) for long rides that's a huge improvement over the stocker.

The issue is when my wife rides with me. She's 5'10" and the buffeting is too much for her over 50mph. If we have to go anywhere on the highway she leans forward so that I break the wind, which results in me getting a sore neck from her leaning against me. I know she'd be a lot more comfortable and therefore willing to do longer rides if she could sit back against the tour pak.

They seem to go pretty quick on the used market. I'd really love to try one out for a couple of hours to see if the improvement is as good as advertised. I guess I'll have to just buy one and take advantage of their return policy if it doesn't work out.

I'm also looking at maybe having the passenger portion of the seat cut down and repadded with a gel insert. Ideally it would be just as comfortable but would lower her a couple of inches and get her out of the breeze a bit.

Do it and don't worry about wanting to return it. You won't! Even if you didn't like it for some reason, you're wife will never let you take it off the bike after she rides behind it.

If you have the holes drilled 1" "lower", wouldn't that actually give you a 14" shield. I'm pretty sure I know what you meant to say but just wanted to clarify.

When I traded my 13 RGS in I kept the MADSTAD. I had to purchase a new CVO base. So if anyone is looking to try a MASTAD out and needs a base let me know.

I am not hijacking, just trying to help others jump on the best windshield.

Did you even try the old base on your CVO? You shouldn't have had to buy a new base because there has never been different size fairings for the CVO's. Ask any dealership. I know some shield manufacturers claim this but it's not true. I used the same shield from my 2010 FLTRX on my 2012 FLTRXSE and it fit just fine.

I also had a SERG windshield on my bike, and went to a standard Madstad with no issues.

So glad I went with Madstad (16"). I love the adjustability, and it does a great job with wind protection.

To be honest.....it's not nearly as ugly as people give it credit for, but I can see why some will hate.
