2016 Ultra - 15" Thresher vs Tall VStream

This is my humble contribution to the Tall riders quest for a windshield. I haven't seen any comments on the newly released National Cycle VStream shield so I thought riders might be interested in my experience and a couple pictures.

I'm 6' 3" with a 31" inseam, my bike is a 2016 Road Glide Ultra, my seat is a Le Pera Maverick Daddy Long Legs. My helmets are a Harley 1/2 helmet and a Shoei Quest full face.

For a baseline, wind from the stock windshield hits me square in the face even at city speeds. It's fairly clean but robust and with a full face helmet its comfortable with little buffeting when all the fairing vents are open. Its best described as mostly harmless. Stereo is useless but very little buffeting induced by big trucks.

Long Ride Shields 15" Thresher - Nicely constructed and solid. This is a "flip" style and there is some distortion on the top 3" of the screen due to the curve. It look Ok on the bike. It creates a good sized empty pocket of air which is great up to 80kph but the pocket starts to collapse at higher speeds and the wind on the edge of the pocket is very turbulent. The wind hits me at brow level and over 80kph and I get a drumming turbulence on my head that is bad enough to blur my vision. Its worse with the 1/2 helmet than the full face. I believe if you fit within the still pocket of air you would like the shield but you might find that you are looking through the distorted portion of the shield. Stereo can be used below 80kph but useless above that. Seem to get a "barn-door" effect around big trucks with lots of buffeting. It did work well in heavy rain and pushed most of the rain up over my head.

National Cycle Tall VStream - Very well constructed shield. This design isn't intended to give a completely still pocket of air for the rider, its more about creating clean, controlled air flow around the rider. It about a 1/2 taller in the sight line than the Thresher but there is no distortion and is amazingly clear. It look quite good on the bike. I get a gentle breeze up to 70kph and a nice brisk wind above that. The air flow stays smooth right up to 130kph. It works well with the 1/2 helmet and with the full face is peaceful and serene right up to 130kph. The stereo is useful at highway speeds and there is no "barn-door" effect and buffeting around big trucks. I haven't had this one out in the rain yet.

The VStream is the best fit for me and the one I will be keeping for now. I think the Thresher is a great windshield it just doesn't seem to work well for me.

A few crappy pictures of the two windshields are attached to the next couple messages. If you are interested the location is near Mill Bay on Vancouver Island, BC.

Couple more pictures of the shields, sorry I didn't take pictures for comparison purposes but if someone really needs better photos or measurements I can probably do that for you.

Nice pictures of the bike and they help show how clear the VStream windshield is.
