Customizing Windvest that was too tall for me.

So yesterday, I decided to break out the 14" Windvest I had bought several months ago that was too tall for me to see over. I took my other windshield by Long Riders off (stingray and I like the shape of that windshield but it was about 1/12" too short. (Another Story). So first, I put the Windvest on the bike with just the two center screws semi loose. Now I spread out the sides a little and made it slip past the rubber seal making the windshield tilt down at the top until I got it almost inline with the upper air vent. This made the Windvest follow more inline with the shape of the Shark nose similar to the Klock Werks. Once I had it where I wanted it, I took masking tape and marked the shape of the bottom of the Windvest inline with the rubber gasket seal at the bottom. I checked and double checked to make sure I had it correct.

I then took it off and went to the work bench and took a 4" thin cutoff wheel on the 4" side grinder and cut off the bottom of the Windvest along the masking tape. Very easy to cut and leaves a very nice finished edge. Once I test fit the Windvest and correct any areas the needed touching up with a 4" sanding wheel on the side grinder. Once that was done, I took emory cloth and finished the edges and cleaned it up even further. Now I put it back on, Put the center screws in and lined up the Windvest. I marked where the back two holes needed to be drilled as I had completely cut those off with the trim job. I took a small drill bit and drilled a pilot hole then took a bit about 4 sizes bigger than the screws to give some adjustment room. I took the Windvest back off, took the sanding wheel and slotted the front to holes a little deeper taking care to shape them just like the factory slots. Once I had them where they needed to be, I put it back on and tightened it down. Perfect fit. Now I went to work on the sides of the Windvest. I like the way the Stingray sides are cut. They look more stylish than the Windvest in that regard.

I drew the shape of the Stingray on to the Windvest while holding them together on both sides. Then I put masking tape on the shape of the marks I had drawn and cut that portion off with the cutting wheel, cleaned up with the sanding wheel and then touched up with the emory cloth. With a few adjustments on the sidecuts, I now have a Windshield with a bigger flip than the Stingray but with the shape that looks cooler, and it tilts more inline with the fairing. I test rode it out and now it fits my field of view perfectly and gives me that great Windvest wind protection that I love about their leading the pack in that regard. I'll post some pics and tell me what you think or any suggestions. It was sunny and no that is not imperfections that show up in the pictures, it was just the glare of the sun on the edges.
