Long Ride Shields Mako Shield
I figured I'd do a write up for those with the second gen Road Glides.
I have a 2012 Road Glide Custom with 14" Santee bars, a Corbin solo seat, progressive monotube front suspension at 1" lower than stock and Xotic rear suspension at about 1.5" lower than stock. I'm 6 foot with a 32" inseam. So there is all the info for comparison values.
I statred with a LRS Phantom windshield when I bought the bike as I had LRS shields on my Street Glide and thought they were great. Well the Phantom was terrible and I quickly moved on to a 12" Windsplitter from HD. This shield provided better wind resistance than the Phantom, my glasses shook compared to dancing everywhere, plus it looked much better than stock or the Phantom. Recently I decided to try the Mako from LRS. I bought an 11" dark tint and put it on Friday morning. Fit was great, clarity was good and the shield seemed thicker than the Windsplitter. Once I got out on the road I can say this is a huge improvement over the older Phantom and even an improvement over the Windsplitter. Now my glasses don't move at all until I get above 70, and even at 80 they just move around slightly. I can't really feel any buffeting like I used to, it's just that the glasses will move slightly but not to the point I feel it interferes with anything. I was also surprised that I could lower the radio about two bars as I could hear it much better, with much of the wind noise I had become accustomed to disappearing. With the 11" I can see just over the shield, which is how I like to ride, but have to look through it for precise riding on uneven surfaces or in heavy traffic, where you have to see a foot or so directly in front of the wheel.
My guess is a 12" shield would be perfect and cancel all wind but then I'd be constantly looking at the top edge, which would drive me nuts, so a 11" is a good compromise for me.
I hope this can answer anyone's questions that might be looking at moving to a LRS Mako.
