Buky Assault bars and engine guard install

OK, first off I am no Harley guru but I have several riding buddies and we all get together and work on our bikes. We have done probably done 10 or so sets of bars. My 2013 RGC is the first fly by wire bike we have done and we wanted to learn and learn we did.

I installed four major componenets. I want to list them next and go through each one. I want to tell everyone my real world experience on these parts with MY experience because it seems to differ from many. Not just the install but the whole experience of buying and using these parts. I am not "ragging" on anyone here, I just want to document my experience for anyone looking to do this type of install. Then I will get to the install. Pictures might have to follow later.

1. Buky 16 inch assault bars
2. Buky engine guard
3. Magnum Black Pearl cables
4. M3 Metalworks Ghost brackets

1. I had a hard time even contacting Buky. I called them many, many times and very rarely got to actually speak to anyone. I left messages and never once had them call me back. I loved their bars after seeing them on Vic's Myroadglide.com and had to have them. When I finally talked with them I had many questions and was directed to ask Vic or go on his blog. ????? The lady on the phone wasn't much help. I ordered the bars and wiring extension. The lady messed up my order and didn't put the extension order in. Yes you guessed it, several unanswered calls later I got that straightened out. They charged me a fortune for shipping. I don't know why. I expected to wait on the bars and I did. The arrived and one bar end was sticking out of the box about 4 inches. I was mad but no damage occured. The bars ended up looking Beautiful! Powder coat was like glass (remember this for later) and welds were slick. Very Happy with them. They forgot the wiring extensions! Yes, several calls later I informed them they neglected to send the wires. They sent them a few days later, no big deal.

2. The engine guards were ordered after the bars. I didn't understand how they worked. The lady I talked to at Buky didn't understand how they worked. She told me to go online and ask how they worked. Really? I asked Vic what held the blinkers and lower fairing and he told me he used M3 Metalwork ghost fairing brackets. OK. So I ordered the engine guard from Buky. They arrived and like the bars were a fortune in shipping. However, they are also beautiful. Workmanship is awesome. Seriously, dealing with Buky was not the best experience but their products are awesome.

3. I ordered black pearl cables from Magnum Shielding and a lady I talked to on the phone had no advice what so ever for me on lengths. So, after asking on this forum I went +6 clutch and brake cables and ordered the lower twin disc brake lines as per punching in my year and bike in their website. I received them and was pleased with the looks and quality. The lower Non ABS line I got is the one the website told me to get but the box said '08-'09. It was different than my original but after some work we got it to fit.

4. The M3 Metalworks brackets took quite a while to order. The owner said they were moving so it might be a while. No big deal. Life gets in the way, I understand. They moved and he told me to wait while he found a new powder coater and when he found one that did the work to his satisfaction he would send me the brackets. OK. I was sent the brackets and the powder coat job was the worst I have ever seen. The brackets looked to me like they were cut and shaped and then sent to PC. The edges were sharp and jagged and the PC was all "bubbly". Do I want to wait another long time or keep them so I can see the new engine guard? I kept them. I am going to send a lot of stuff to powder coat so i figured I could file the edges and re PC them. Turns out they are very well designed and fit perfectly, the fit and finish is HORRIBLE on them. I ended up putting some car door edge trim on the edges for now so they won't chew up my cables.

Next the install.

I hate to say it but I didn't take too many pics of install but I want to hit the highs and lows of my install. There are other great threads on how to do a Bar install.

Everything was going great, just like every other install my buddies and I have done. We decided to get rid of the green clip on the FBW throttle so we hard wired it. Everywhere I have read the Buky 1.5" bars are great to run the wires through. We spent probabaly 3 hours trying to fish the wires through. The bars chewed through two layers of tape and some wires. We had to keep trying several times, but finally got it. I had read Buky really cleaned out the inside of their bars. Not mine. Really full of burs.

Next, we got the bars mounted and started putting everything together and noticed the powder coat was thick, real thick. We had to work for a while to file the notches in the bar end to accept the FBW throttle. OK. No big deal. Then we tried to put the grips on. Not even close. So, we started sanding lightly with sandpaper and after an hour or so got nowhere. We ended up using my air angle grinder with a sanding disc. I shit you not, we had to take the bar ends down to bare metal and polish it to get the grips to fit. That PC was 1/8" thick! Great, but I would think they would take into consideration that grips have to go on the ends!

We got everything back together and started the bike. It ran but no throttle response at all. Everything else worked. Ran the error code and P2122 came up. So, guess what? the bars came off. All the wires looked good so made a trip up to local stealership and they told us the FBW throttle was probably bad. The FBW is SENSITIVE! I don't know how we messed it up but we did. Got a new one and holy shit, the new throttle had three foot wires on it ending in pins to put in clip! So I spent$40 on wiring extensions I ended up not using and paid $90 for a new FBW with three foot wires. Slid them through and clipped them straight into the clip inside the fairing. Got it together and it runs great with no codes and has better throttle response than before.

The magnum cables are awesome but +6 on both sides was my call and the wrong call. I could have gone +4 on brake and I really needed +8 on clutch. With creative routing, they work. They are really nice.

Next was the Buky engine guard and ghost brackets. The engine guard worried me a bit because of the PC on the bars. All I had to do was chase a little PC out of the top mount threaded part and it fit like a glove. The M3 Metalworks ghost bracket also fit like a glove. They were easy to install and fit very well. With me being real pissed about the finish, they redeemed themselves by the fit. The edges were real sharp so I put some car door edge trim on it. It turned out to really look good and even look factory. After some creative routing, the cables didn't contact the edges anyway. But the edge trim looks great on there anyway.

In the end, I love the Bars, Engine guard, and ghost brackets. However it has been a long hard couple of days and i have had a couple too many beers (over those two days) and my old back hurts. I guess thats what happens when you use aftermarket parts and deal with aftermarket compnies. It was touch and go there for a while but my baby is back on the road. Pictures will follow.

Finished product. Yeah I know one picture is sideways and there is an ecclectic mix of black and chrome on the bike. I took some pics with mommas camera and of course she doesn't know where the cable is. These are some from my phone for now.

I only ordered bars from them. The shipping was high but the package is so big and heavy UPS is going to charge a fortune. I never had any issues with reaching them. I called once and emailed a couple of times with a question or two. They shipped much faster than I expected 4 days instead of 2 weeks. Their quality was excellent. This was in late January early February so maybe something has changed? People come and go in businesses and that can really affect service.

Glad you got it all together. It looks really good.

Thanks Dave, your bike looks great. I still have the stock mirrors because I can't decide on what mirrors would look good on these bars. I like the look of your bar and mirror set up. I was looking at those style mirrors and it is nice to see what they look like.

I had read nothing but good things about Buky and I love their bars. I was really let down by the transaction process with them and my bars were pretty burred up on the inside. I NEVER got a call back from them or an email. I had to keep calling, sometimes three+ times a day. I always got the same lady and she really didn't seem like she new what she was doing. No offense to her, she was really nice. I asked her if I could talk with someone else who knew more and she said she was the only one I could talk with. She actually told me to get on the myroadglide.com blog and ask my questions there or get on Buky's facebook and ask someone on there. Wow. In the end, I love the bars. Even though I had to take a friggin grinder to the bar ends to get the powder coat OFF. The grips barely fit on the bare metal! (I would think they would think of grips and FBW having to go onto the bars right?) They did make everything right and the bars look bad ass.

Too bad you've had such a bad time with Buky. I have the 12" Malos and am waiting for the engine and bag guards to show up. Engine guard looks killer on your ride (even if you are riding up the wall ;-) so I'm hoping for the same result. I placed the order on line and I received a call from Buky making sure I understood I would need extra parts to fit my SE CVO RG .... they even offered the order codes for HD, so, perhaps they are stepping up?
