Max ape height with hand protection from cold

Any advice as to how high you can go with apes while still protecting hands from the cold? I have a problem with circulation in my fingers so I need some protection from the cold air (definitely not a big problem right now!). I suppose I could go with heated grips?

Are there windshield options that allow higher bars with hand protection?

With the stock bars and gloves I am OK but my last bike had no fairing and even with gloves my fingers would go white on me. The little protection from the fairing and/or windshield seems to make the difference for me.

I live in Colorado and ride in the winter, so I was in your same boat when deciding what size apes to get. I liked the Monkey bars, but couldn't decide on 10's or 12's at 6ft/34" inseam. I decided on the 10's to maintain a minimal level of hand-grip protection from the windshield/fairing. When I ordered the bars, I also paid the extra $50 to have them mill out the throttle side grip to accomodate Heat Demon grip warmers. The combination of 10" bar height and demons work almost perfect. Only the last 0.5" of the grips get hit with a fair amount of wind at freeway speed. Like you, my hands have terrible circulation and my hands are always cold in cooler weather, even when my body is warm. Many guys like electric gloves, but I hate the idea of being wired to my bike. Plus I have longer-than-average thumbs, so I have a very limited selection of winter gloves that will fit. I actually ended up have some custom gloves made.

PS.....If you decide to get grip warmers, I recommend going with the Demons instead of the HD grips. 75% of those that buy them say they fail between 2 months and 2 years. Its hard to find a Heat Demon owner say they failed after years of ownership.

I would definitely stay around that 10 to 12" size, my 14's have my hands in the wind all the time. I bought some good insulated leather gloves, but they don't do much when its 30-40 degrees. I find myself lowering one hand to the engine to warm it up fairly often.

One thing you can do is take the bike for a ride, move your hand up off the bar until you find wind, and remember that height above the stock bar. You can then take measurements to find how tall of bar works for you, but take care to look at the width on your new bars too as any wider than stock will lessen your wind protection the higher you go.

You have to stick around 10" in my opinion. I have 12" pushed forward with a 8" kw windshield. My hands are definitly in the wind. It depends on the lean of your bars and the height of your windshield but like said before I wouldn't go over 10-12".
