Disappointed...

So, to make a long story short...I have been putting money aside this summer to do Yaffe 12" Monkey Bars, Monotubes, and chrome front end on my 2011 RGC. I ordered the bars from Phat Performance they arrived quickly, and I brought them along with the chrome front end kit to the local indy shop I use. The mechanic quoted my $1500 to install the bars, braided cables, Progressive Monotubes and installation of the chrome forks.

I tried to explain to him about the countless threads I have read on wiring the monkey bars, and was brushed off with "yeah, I do them all the time." So I leave the shop psyched that the mods are getting done.

Fast forward 3 days, I get a call from the mechanic telling me that the bars are impossible to wire, and that he is way over the price he quoted me. He then goes on to bad mouth the bars, and say due to the bends the wire integrity will be compromised over time. He also states that he had no idea that I was bringing him bars like these.

I explain that I have several friends with the bars, and that they are a super popular product, and that they can in fact be wired. I can tell that he doesn't want to hear it, and is done trying to wire the bars.

I ask what my options are and he explains either pick different bars, or pick up your bike. So wanting my bike back in one piece I order WO502's, great product, just not what I wanted.

So now I have a set of 12" Yaffe's that I am not sure if I can return, the original box has been discarded, and bars on my bike that I don't know if I will like. I am picking the bike up this afternoon, and am really disappointed in the way this was handled, and that I had to settle with a product.

I'm not letting this stress me out, I know there are people in this world that would love my problems.

Not to be non-sympathetic. Tell the guy to shove it. Put the bike on a trailer and bring it home. Use Donks stickies and do it yourself. Or hell, have him read the posts on here..

I for one am no mechanic, and i wired 12" bars on mine with little to no problems in just a couple of afternoons of work after a 10 hour day at work.... So if a mechanic who is charging you $1,500 says he cant do it. I would worry about the rest of the bike getting done right......

1500? Damn how many hours of labor is that? Sounds like you need a new Indy. Never heard of a guy getting in over his head on an install then trying to stick it to you on the labor cost. Most guys still get you out in the price they quoted you and chalk it up as a learning experience...

That sucks when your expectations are shot down. On a lighter note are the Monkey bars chrome? Did he scratch them up? Thats the bars I was going to purchase this winter let me know I might buy them off of you.

Everyone does what they have to do, but as for me, I would defintly NOT be dealing with that asshat again. He was overpriced, and appears to really not know his shit. Yea those bars are a PITA to wire, but hell even I did it with a buddy when I was running them.
On the up side, chances are the replacement bars will work for ya, and your bike is back in your garage, or better yet out on the road gettin some miles put on her.

It sucks that you're out so much money....but....maybe this is lesson learned and you'll attempt doing you're own work from now on. Number one, its much more satisfying knowing you did it yourself and second, you'll save a ton a money to put toward buying more stuff for your bike.

Lesson definately learned and Tracy is correct I need to start doing the work myself. I'm assuming that the bars will be in new perfect condition, and I will be looking to sell them.

That price is high in my opinion. Go get your bike and never go back to that indy again. Or maybe get the number of monkey bars yaffee has sold over the years and show your indy that thousands of other mechanics know how to wire them. Anyways, put your bars for sale on here, they'll go quick. Everyone is always complaining they are on backorder so you should have no problem selling em..

I would definetly not be going back to that shop, as stated above, buy the service manual and use this forum for 90% of the work you want done. If you can turn a wrench at all you would be amazed at what you can accomplish. When I did my handlebars wheel and forks I was quoted $1600, that was just labor, I figued I'd do it myself, couldn't have been more pleased, not to mention since I did it, I knew it was done right.

I'm just hoping that that the WO502's work out well. I'm just going to move on from the experience, and dust my tools off.
