Here's a stupid question

Does anyone know if there are different grip lengths for FBW grips? I have had a gap in my controls bolting up the the 1.5" bars. It finally bugged me enough to email the manufacturer and they basically told me to cut the bars, or get a new set of grips with a deeper fit. Just me, but...... Anyway, just asking and getting some info before I call them back.

I don't think its a stupid question, but all grips I've seen are pretty much the same length, if they're telling you to cut the bars, it sounds like they've run into this before. I blame the manufacture of the bars.

I'm with you. They completely cut them too long. And the reply I got back from them was basically admitting it. They told me "other customers have found longer ones. But I don't know what that are".

Agreed, the grips fit my BR bars perfectly. You can't just cut the damn bars, they have to be notched for the TBW. I doubt they advertised a hack saw and dremel was needed for installation.

This may sound weird but make sure the internal wiring is pulled through the bars enough. I have probably about 1/8" gap on between the control clamp on one side and no gap on the other side. My buddies bars have a larger gap.

I pulled the clamps apart and bottomed the grips, then put the clamps together and there is more than a half inch gap.

Man. That's too bad. Ugly! No offense, Bro. They should look great!

Whose bars are they? About to buy some apes for first "winter" project. Sure would like to know.

That are Carlini Gangster apes. The response I have gotten so far is that I just need to cut them down. I replied that I waited months for those bars, and for $400 I need to cut on them. And of course now I can't get them to respond.

So here are the last two emails that went back and forth.

Rex,

Well, I've emailed Performance Machine, Avon, Kuryakyn, and Joker Machine. They all note that they make their grips based on the stock measurements. Then they physically measured them for me. They are all within 1/10 of an inch.
Then I emailed a few of the custom bar manufacturers and asked about the measurements, (without giving your name, or the Carlini name) and they all responded with the same. That the bars were cut too long. When I emailed the pictures and asked of a solution, again, they all responded with the same. The bars have to be cut, noting that much gap can't be made up anywhere. 1/8" maybe, but a half inch isn't doable.
Have you been able to recheck your jig and remeasure?

Thanks,
