2012 RGU Will Heated Grips work with Apes

I have a 2012 RGU. I am looking to go with a 10" or 12" ape to allow me to sit further back in my seat. Has anyone successfully installed the heated grips with the Fire By Wire? What else will I need to purchase beside the Bars? Will I need to purchase a longer Throttle sensor cable?

What is the largest bars I can go with before having to replace cables or something?

Thanks in advance

Yes heated grips will work for you on your RG with Apes.

The second answer is with MOST bars you can go to 12" apes and still use the cables. I say most because you may not get them to work if you get some extremely wide apes. You will have to re-route your clutch cable as well but it will fit. The internal wires will be plenty. I have 12" wild one outlaw apes and everything fit no problem.

There's lots of great information on apes in the handle bar section of this forum, every thing from heights to install pics, to anything else you might need to make this conversion.

I know Harley make their own heated grips, and Avon has just released some heated grips that look better (IMHO) and are cheaper than the HD ones.

Good luck in your search, and welcome to the shark tank

I hate it when people just tell others to search for an answer. Yes, some people are computer/internet savvy but...... some aren't. (I do understand how frustrating it can be to see the same question asked over and over again but I have friends that can't use a pc to save their lives so I try not to judge a person as being too lazy to do their own search.)

This page should help answer the heated grip question and discuss the install procedure. (When you have time, make sure to read all three of the "stickies" in the "controls & handlebars" section)

https://www.roadglide.org/showthread.php?t=5694

Also, you should be fine with stock cables if only going 10-12" apes but there are too many variables to guarantee they will work.

*edit* sorry about my "attitude" - it's been a very stressful week

I also answered part of his question as well, search is your friend, and I directed him to the handlebar section, where there is a wealth of reading on the OP's question, as well as other things he may also find interesting and useful.

Attitude and stress taken into account ;-p

First off, welcome aboard smyln and it is a good question for your first post. The answear to your question is yes heated grips can still be used with apes or any other bar that fits. You'll have to wire them just like you would with stock bars just use longer wires. Also like others said, it depends on the bars. Seems most users who went with 12" apes were able to use stock wiring but depending on the bars this may not be the case.

2011 RGU with more money then sence in it.
Oh and its black because blacks faster.

IMHO It might depend on where you live and how cold does it get when you ride. I had heated grips installed on my 12" apes and my fingers were frost bitten but I had sweaty palms. Heat grips only heat the inside of your hands. I bought heated gloves and was a happy puppy. That's what for me anyway.

+1............ what he said, gloves are way better at keeping you toasty, and the battery ones got no wires to deal with either!!

I know that you were trying to help by sending him to the handlebar section but if you look at the top of this thread... you can see he posted his question in the handlebar section. (which I guess is why I felt like OP wasn't getting as much help as he might be hoping for)

Please believe, I am not trying to start a fight. I just wanted to explain how my thinking pattern started. I agree with you 100%, great info here and usually plenty of people around to answer questions.

I take full responsibility for screwing up the OP's first post

How did you make out and which bars did you go with? I'm contemplating WO502 or WO612 and also have heated grips. I'd like to do all internal wiring as well. Share your experience as well as your height, inseam to give an idea of fit. I read you may have to chop 1/2" off the left bar end to get the correct alignment with the 1 1/4" section of the bar. Any experience with this?

Thanks for your help!
