Scooter problems.

Haven't posted in a LONG time. But, I gotta vent a bit. I took my 13 FLTRU in last Nov with a shy 11k miles for a knocking/rattling noise in the lower end. Dealer replaced lifters, installed ez adjustable pushrods, replaced compensator with new style, and adjust clutch. It started knocking again shortly after getting it back.

Fast forward to last month. Got back from 3k+ mile trip. After washing bike, fired up to dry engine off. At about 2k rpm, sounded like marbles rattling around in engine! Had wife hold gas for me, and I couldn't narrow it down for nothing! Loud on either left or right side, mostly front cylinder, not down low, not up high, kind of middle of cylinder. Tried stethescope, no help.

So, back to dealer she goes. Of course once off trailer, we couldn't hear the marbles! Well, it's been almost a month, and we're going to replace tensioners with aftermarket and install Axtell oil bypass kit, at my expense, minus cost of factory parts. He also felt a vibration I hadn't. Found clutch hub with chatter marks, and trans output shaft bearing shot. In addition, compensator is shot again! Damn! I put 7k miles on since the last warranty work, and here we are doing it again, and then some! So here we are waiting on a seal hoping to have it back together next week, just to see if it's fixed!

This is my 3rd HD in the past 7 years, with a combined mileage of 70k miles. This is the ONLY bike that's been to the shop for warranty work, and to be honest, my confidence is a bit shaken. In fact, since I started riding street again 14 years ago, this is the ONLY bike to go in for warranty work out of a dozen or so bikes and 140K miles!

Maybe I'm just spoiled, lucky, or both, but this one is pissing me off! My eyes have started to wander! If I don't get back on two wheels soon, I'm gonna go nuts! Hmm, perfect excuse to get that springer or shovel I've been wanting for awhile?

Sorry for the rant, but it seems to me either HD QC is in the crapper, or they've reached/exceeded the design limits with these 103's on the heavy bikes, or both. I didn't have any issues with a 96/107 on my dyna, or a 96 on my FLTRX, but this 103 has been a rattly bitch since early on! Definitely regretting selling the dyna and X to get this one! Guess that's what I get for betraying the faithful ones! Oh well, maybe next weekend we'll be back in the saddle! I hope!

Sorry to hear of all these problems with your scoot, hope they find and fix them once and for all.
Sounds like you may have that " one in a hundred " with never ending issues.

May the worst be behind you, and better days will follow !!

Monday or Friday bike maybe. ........ I've been pretty fortunate so, most problems I've had have to do with something I did....... but I know the feeling, been down that same road with a couple of cars I've owned.

Your not liking working on the Shark and you want to get a Trouble head ? ( thats funny there.)
Agree with dbell, sounds like you got a Friday bike to start with ,along with the shitty HD compensator that the moco put on the bikes. Looks like you got the fixes all set up tho. I believe the stock tensioner caused a lot of problems. Good luck with your repairs.

Same here. She takes my abuse and keeps going. Another reason for me not to get a new one

Thanks guys! Sorry about the rant, just gotta let off some steam, can't get my knees in the breeze to do it.

I'm not holding my breath it's fixed since I'm on my second latest and greatest compensator. Fingers are crossed, but not pushing it any further than that.

At least with a shovel, I can expect it to act up from time to time, that's just the nature of the beast. This TC should run forever! If I beat on my ride, I'd understand it, but I don't.

Still have wood for an evo springer tho!

Hoping for a water cooled RGU soon, but we'll see. After this experience, if she starts playing nice, I may wait awhile to make sure they have the bugs worked out of the wet heads before diving in again.

Thanks!

My 09 had some issues with transmision bearings, primary bearing, starter clutch, compensator. Lastly the crank went at 40,000?
I think it is all related to that automatic tensioner. I am putting in the manual one on my 13 BBP.
I hope you get it resolved.

I'm on my second compensator, and it makes those funny sounds once in awhile, when it goes I think I will go solid or belt drive.

I talked to my HD tech, and an engine builder buddy. They both recommended leaving the stock tensioner. Baffled me, but I'm not the expert. Both said it would be noisy. I said that was fine as long as I wasn't puking compensators and bearings everytime I turned around. I tried the Hayden tensioner, but wasn't impressed. Once the shoe wore in, about 9K miles, the chain made a zinging sound. Pass on that, shoe material is a bit too soft IMO. Belt drive may be the way to go, just have to use a guard, or invest in Levi's! I may also invest in the Baker unit, just because. I'll pull the cover and check the tension sometime later this summer. If it's too tight, Baker here I come!
