Adjustable push rod question

I understand that I can pass on taking off the top end if I just cut the stock push rods in half and replace them with the adjustables. But if I plan on taking the heads off anyway to replace the head gasket and have them reworked why do some cams say that adjustable push rods are required? Thank you for your enlightening comments.

I'm no expert by any means but here goes. The way I look at it, is the stock non adjustable has a small chance to be the right length. All it would take is the base size of the cam to be different from the stock one, and the pushrod is too long/short. Head gasket thickness could be different, or what if the heads have been shaved a little to clean them up. These 3 variables would make me want to have peace of mind that my valves are adjusted properly.

In addion to the above, adjustable pushrods will let you precisely set the proper preload on the lifters which I would recommend replacing if doing cams. Some lifters require more preload than others.

Adjustable pushrods are NOT required and many people prefer to run the solids. You will want to verify length if you are going to a thinner head gasket and/or a cam with a smaller base circle, but you can run the solids assuming that things check out.

Thanks for your help. It seems obvious now but for a while I couldn't grasp it. I do plan on installing a thinner head gasket so adjustables will be necessary. Thank you for your help. How do you adjust preload? I know you don't want to totally collapse the lifter.

The instructions that come with the lifters will tell you. Pay attention to the "threads per inch" of the pushrods you buy. You tube or Fuel Moto's website has videos on installing the adjustables. It's not hard.

When a cam maker requires adjustable's it's because the base circle of the cam(s) are different from stock.
Good advice on replacing lifters by Hullhorr. S&S are very good IME.

They do make perfect fit pushrods for all applications. Adjustable aren't the only answer. Adjustables are nice when you are not sure what cams you may like and change from time to time. Both do the job required.

Another quick note for insight.. NOT ALL adjustable pushrods can be installed by merely cutting out the solids.... I'm doing the research on this and found some adjustables you can do it this way and others you can't... it depends on the design of the adjustables.
