voiding warranty

how is it that HD can say if you have them do any engine work on your bike it will void there warranty. was thinking cams. their SE cams. got email from service manager saying will void my warranty. just bought from them in august. 3rd new bike from them specifically. wtf is that about. do they not trust there own parts? anyone have any solid proof that the company can void the warranty, or is it time to go into managers office and well u know.

The warranty call is in the dealers hands ~ I have had 30 HD's and 4 new ones ~ three of them CVO's ~ all have had modifications and I have never had a warranty or extended warranty claim denied ~ sounds like you need to find a different dealer ~ three dealers will give you three completely different stories ~ Good Luck

i will be for sure looking into this. i did the 95 upgrade in my 04 heritage at home in my shop. ive been fixing and building all my harleys since day one. had prob 15 of them from early shovels to now. when i did the 95 on the heritage there was some warranty work done because of valve seals. they warrantied it no problem. now this dealer has some new service manager that knows all. only reason was gonna get them to do it is due to the EFI. now im wondering that the bassanis and the screamin eagle breather and the screamin eagle race tuner i had them install when new is gonna void it. he never mentioned anything at that time. im deffinately going to be having a chat with the owner of the place.

voiding warranty

that's a long story and they can void it but usually why happens is the dealer that does the work will continue to honor the warranty but if you go travel to another dealer and they know you did motor work of any kind they will not honor it but that sorry piece of crap dealership that did the work should or they suck and for that moated if your on the road and something other than motor related problem occurs any dealer should fix it but I imagine you wood have to throw a fit , if your dealer is telling you that and you normally do business with them I would find me a new dealer and tell them to fuck off in a big way . when I buy a bike they always ask me what I'm doing to motor first and they don't even. do the work unless it is a warranty and I've never had a problem getting warranty work done for any reason

I had the 5 year extended on mine and they disallowed the following: Radio, Starter, Regulator due to engine work I had done. I cancelled the remaining an no longer use the dealership for any work. If I need HD parts I'll either order from John at Horny Toad or use Ocala HD and take to my Indy if I can't do it...

i think we should have tho option to have the cost of the factory warranty knocked off price of purchase. if they cant warranty work done using SE parts then what good is it. HD has gone downhill in last while. long while. dont get me wrong. i still love my vtwin. its in my blood. but all it is now is tshirts and bolton chrome. i remember going in to get parts for my shovel. i installed an evo cam and lifters and blocks. i went in looking for somethinmg i cant remember exactly what it was. i asked them for the part and they asked what bike., told them was a shovel. they said its an evo part. i said ya i know. they said u cant use that part. give me the part i said. they said well u cant do that with evolution part. wont fit on a shovel. i had to lead him outside and show him the bike that i rode there on that had evolution valvetrain on a shovel engine to prove that they dont know everything. man its a differant world. sorry way off topic but i just started getting carried away when that came into my head. i guess my point is why not build a bike that runs cool, has decent usable power for travel and 2up, and uses bearings that arent made of plastic to begin with. i know my fault for buying new. i wish harley would get back to their roots instead of hosting a worldwide fashion show.

HD cannot 'void' your factory warranty unless the bike has been declared totaled.
Period.
End of conversation.
The Magnuson act says so. It states that to deny factory warranty HD HAS TO PROVE your after market part caused the failure.
For example this means there is no way they can 'legally' deny warranty on your radio if you installed a tuner. It doesn't mean they won't try. Your after market tuner msy be a stickier issue if you burn a piston.
Don't take my word for it, read the act yourself.
Knowledge is the best protection.

Warranty disclaimer

There is a warranty disclaimer on page one of the SE pro racing parts catalog. It says:

"Warranty: Installation of Screamin' Eagle products, and similar off-road or competition products from other manufacturers, except some street-legal offerings installed by authorized Harley dealers, may void your H-D limited vehicle warranty. See your local dealer for more information.

Installation of a California performance product on to a 49-state motorcycle or a 49 state performance product on to a California model motorcycle will void manufacturers warranty, as it will not result in a street-legal configuration.

Caution: Harley Davidson motorcycles modified with some Screamin' Eagle high-performance engine parts must not be used on public roads and, in some cases, may be restricted to closed course competition."

Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act requires that a limited warranty must be "conspicuously designated" as a limited warranty if they are not full warranties.

So if your bike is not "street-legal" MoCo will not honor a warranty.

A friend of mine put a 120R on his 2012 CVO street glide. (I know, 110 isn't fast enough. He refused to give me his bank PIN #, and believe me, I asked!) He detonated it at 400 miles. They are not warrantied by MoCo as they are a race only engine.

When I was there on Tuesday, it was torn down, and both parties were happy. I don't know the specifics, but the tech working on it told me they were honoring warranty, because they installed it. I like my local dealer. He helped me when I had problems on my stage IV Low Rider at the 85K mile mark. Find a dealer that stands by their work, and warranty is a non issue.

As mmcmsw says, the dealer needs to stand by their work. While it says on many of the HD performance parts that it may void your warranty, the dealers I know say that they will stand by any parts that are purchased and installed through them. So in essence, the dealer (not HD) is warranting that.

the esp is different than the 2 year warranty. they have a lot more latitude to deny coverage with that. on the 2 year warranty, the magnusson moss warranty act applies and they could not have denied coverage on the radio because you put in cams.

you think it's bs that hd can deny coverage? take a look at the screaming eagle catalog. its chock full of items that are marked, off road use only, will void warranty. and with the economy in the shape that it's in, everybody is looking for ways to save money. warranty is a big one.

I understand the concept of reality, but find it too confining for a way of life.
