It's a fairly simple task. If you don't have a service manual I would get one so you know the proper torque values and sequences.

Remove the fuel tank and everything is right there. A couple of the bolts on the rear cylinder are difficult to torque back down properly because of access limitations, but otherwise it's pretty straight forward.

A hack-saw works well too, then replace with good adjustables.

Thx fellas. I was able to take off the top cover of the rocker boxes but wasn't sure on how to take off the lower covers. I already have a set of SE adjustable pushrods installed but It wasn't installed by me. That and the cams were the only things I wasn't confident on installing by myself.

Q, have you seen this video from Fuel Moto? Not sure how far you have gotten with the heads/rods tubes. Maybe this will help: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=mMnQNPbwTfw

Damn...I was seriously thinking of ordering the 107" kit from FM and doing the work myself using the videos as a guide. Now you have me second guessing. Anyone know of a good builder/tuner in the Sacramento area? :)

Do the work yourself. It's not tough, work within your limitations. Put in the FM tune if you get a tuner from them, if not pick up a TTS and plug in a close tune.

Take an easy ride to Hayward and visit Bob Lobenberg at RC Cycles. He's a great guy. Coolest part is that you can stand there in the wind tunnel side by side with him and he will explain exactly what he's doing. Very informative. He did my '05 RG back in '06.

You won't regret it.

That said, I don't know of any tuners in Sac, am sure there are many. I know of a few other guys in San Jose, but haven't had them do the tune on my bikes.

I ordered the 107 and did it myself. It's easy as 1 2 3. The videos are really helpful. Just take your time and pay attention to detail! Hell, call me if you need help! I enjoyed doing mine!

Goodmad, that's what I was thinking. Go slow and just reference the videos when I had a question. I've built up truck motors in the past. Just never done any tuning with the fuel injection systems. This is where the "black magic" seems to come into play. How did you handle this part of your 107 build?

rageglide, thank you for the recommendation. I Googled "Harley tuners" in my area and found RC praised on nearly every site. I will schedule a visit to their shop soon and check them out. I have a PC-V from Fuel Moto. Didn't even consider a canned download to get started. Brain is fried with too much travel lately....having a beer in Sydney Australia as I type this.

Q-Hog, you feeling any better about pulling your heads? Hope so!

I saw the video on the boxes but not the one on removing the push rods so I can get the covers off to powder coat. The rocker box cover video didn't go into detail on taking them out. I'm in no rush.
It's not difficult. NO need to cut the pushrods, that's only if you aren't going to go into the top end. (and yeah hacksaw would be about the least appropriate tool you could find...)

Pop the rocker tops off. Loosen the 4 bolts holding the rocker support bracket in criss cross pattern, evenly about 1/2 turn per iteration. Ideally you would do this when neither valves are off their seat. Once the tension is gone you can loosen them all the way. Remove the 2 (4) bolts that are accessible on the cam side of the engine, reach over or walk around and push the rocker shafts about as far as your pinkie can get em, pull them out the rest of the way. Do one at a time, lifter the rocker out, put the shaft in it to keep them together. Pull the pushrod out. repeat... Remove the breather assy and all the remaining bolts for the rocker. You won't be able to remove the rear rocker support bolts and you'll be fiddling a bit to keep the bolts up out of the bolt holes and to get the lower over the valve springs. Front one is cake, start with it.

The key is not just loosening the rocker support bolts in one fell swoop as that'll potentially break the support bracket. The Service manual shows you all the steps very clearly. lol except the pain in the ass removal of the rear lower... "Remove lower rocker box"

Just a second on NOT using a hacksaw to remove the pushrods! Can't imagine a more inappropriate method to do it, short of a grinding wheel! Use bolt cutters, or simply remove the rocker arms, since you already have the covers off.
