stock 103 vs stock 96

I have a 2009 Ultra 96CI with stage one, slipons and PC V from fuel moto. My friend has a 2012 Ultra 103 CI stock with Rinehart 4" slipons. He weighs in at over 300 lbs and I weigh in at 230lbs. Coming home from Maggie Valley this weekend. On a flat straight stretch we hit it running about 55 and he walked away from me after 85 + mph. Is a 103 that much stronger than a 96 or is my tune not right or is this what I can expect unless I go cams etc. We did not get out of 6th gear so it was just a roll out in 6th at 55.

I would get some cams and stage 1.
I usually bet the stock 103s I meet with my 96

I am staying tuned to see what the experts say but I would say that it would be your tune. I was told that if you put the same components on the 96" & 103" that the 103" would typically get 3 or 4 more Hp and maybe 5 or 6 more on Tq. I run with a guy that has a new 103" stage one with power duals and a guy that has a 2010 SE Ultra stage one with power duals and I can hang right with them up to almost a buck and then they start to pull me. The 103" actually out runs the 110" by a little but I think that is because of the extra weight of the bike and the rider is also a bit heavier. All 3 bikes have SE tuners and were tuned by the same tech.

I have a 96 decated dual head pipe rcx muffler stage 1 download k&n air filter and a dobeck tfi. A buddy has a street glide 103 v&h power duals stage 1 filter and a power commander and I can run right by him anytime I want. We can take off from a stop and I can stay ahead off him a few bikes every time.

I dont understand what you are asking? Does a bigger motor make more power? The same mods on a 96 is going to be less powerful then same mods on a 103.

"there is no replacement for displacement"

That said, you can make up for lack of displacement with different mods ofcourse.

I'd look into some cams! But while I was in there I would also do pistons, heads, displacement, etc....but that's just how I am! I had the same problem...a buddies stock 103 wore my 96 out every where we went. I just went along with getting beat while i collected my pennies and waited for cold weather.... he's nowhere in my sight now! As a matter of fact, I walked a 117 down a couple weeks ago. He pulls me in a 5th gear roll on but I destroy him in the low gears. It's all about where you make the power. If you just want to run with them, put some decent cams in that match your riding style and have fun with it! The key is to get components that work well together. The biggest isn't always the best!

With the weight difference it should not of been that bad of a difference. I bet your tune is off. The stage 1 with the right tune should beat the stocker 103 with a 300 + lb rider.

like other have said though, It all depends where you want your power.

2010 FLTRX , Stage 1, 13" Madstad, Mono tubes, SuperShox, Heritage style bars. Alpine CDE-HD149BT,Soundstream Picasso Nano Series PN4.520 , 5X7 and 6.5 Infinity Kappa speakers
If I have to explain ,you wouldn't under stand anyway.

My '05 SEEG, PC III, K&N will "smoke" my '09 SERG, V&H PowerDuals, V&H FuelPak, V&H ThrottlePak, K&N. The newer bikes are choked down by emissions regs. 'Am in process of fixing that with the SE Stage III Pro Kit in the '09

The fact that you two were in 6th gear tells the tale to me.....the 103" has a bit more torque so it will pull harder in the high hole than the 96" . Drop them down to 5th and it may be a closer race. Tune can come into play, you didn't mention the state of tune of your bud's scoot, but the big thing to me was the gear. Throw in a set of Andrews 48H's and prepare to whip his ass!

One more thing to consider. The 09 and the 12 have different final drive ratios. IIRC they went with a lower ratio in 10 or 11. That alone will make a difference.

2011 RGU with more money then sence in it.
Oh and its black because blacks faster.
