Bel-ray or lucas oil in tranny?

I know there's probably a million treads on tranny oils but here in eastern Canada my choices are limited. I have the dreaded "neutral rattle" and want to try something other than HD oil. Can't find Redline which I would love to try or even Amsoil but can't find it either. The only ones I found today were Lucas Oil V-Twin gear oil 75W 140 and Bel Ray Big twin Transmission oil. Are any of these worth trying? Am kind of afraid they would be too thick. Any comments would be appreciated.

I'm running the Lucas right now and it is a lot quieter than the 20w/50 engine oil. I believe the Redline with shockproof is even better but I couldn't find any locally at the time.

Have been running the Bel-Ray in the transmission and their primary fluid in the primary for 10,000km...works real well, quieter and smoother than the stock HD stuff for sure.

Running Bel Ray in my CVO. Ran Bel Ray in my 02 Ultra. Buddy turned me on to it. He uses nothing else in his tranny. I like it. Quieter and easier shifting.

Good looking Chow you got there denis75.

See if you can locate some Spectro Platinum in your area. You might even be able to order it direct? Not as thick as the Redline, although I doubt that would be an issue if you tried the Redline. The Spectro does a good job of quieting things down and makes for a much smoother shifting transmission.

As for the neutral rattle, have a look at your shifter linkage too, sometimes is has a tendency to rattle sounding a lot like the neutral rattle you hear about. Replacing the stock swivel joints with heim joints will fix the linkage issue and make for a stronger shift linkage.

How about Mobil1 products?? I ran Mobil1 synthetic 80-90W gear oil in my last bike for 40,000 miles, no issues, always ran quiet, drain plug magnet was always clean. I ran the same oil in the primary.
I'm trying Amsoil products at the moment, but woudl have no issues going back to the Mobil1.

2015 RGU CVO........under continuous change......

Thanks for the replies guys, keep em coming... Leaning towards Bel Ray. I've seen Mobil 1 motor oil but not the transmission. Heard good things about Spectro on this forum too but would like to just walk in a store an buy. Also seen the Royal purple 75W 90 but reviews on the forum were not great.

Oh and I did change my linkage HD one with hemjoints. Definitely hear rattle by tranny cover.

Read good things about Spectro, Baker transmissions recommends them. From their FAQ http://bakerdrivetrain.com/frequently-asked-questions
Q: What kind of oil should I use in my Transmission?
A: BAKER recommends Spectro Heavy Duty Platinum 6 Speed Transmission Fluid (75W140) for all factory and BAKER 4, 5, 6 and 7-speed applications. If Spectro cannot be found, use a gearbox grade oil or in a worst case scenario, differential (85W90) fluid.


And an answer I like about syn3:
Q: Do you recommend the new Harley SYN 3 oil?
A: No. SYN 3 is a 20W50 multi-use full synthetic oil that can be used in the transmission, primary, and the engine according to the Factory. SYN 3 is convenient in that only one oil type need be used in the engine and drivetrain. Like most things in life, the trade for this convenience is compromise. 20W50 works OK in the engine but is way too thin to be effective in the transmission and primary under cold and hot operating conditions. If the convenience of having one type of oil in your garage out weighs your patriotic obligation to take good care of your bike, you should consider selling your Harley so you can buy a Toyota Preus. Then you can join the Peace Corps and help orphaned children with dysentery in Zimbabwe.

not meant to be taken personally... but nobody in their right mind should run syn3 in all three... Formula+ is on that list too... that stuff is crap! Put proper trans fluid in the transmission and engine. If the replacement parts are on the factory and you're selling it, go ahead... but not on my watch!

Personally I really miss the Harley Semi-Synth from the 5speed days, now i use the redline shockproof heavy, but I think the medium (blue) would be fine too.

edit - (I used to use Spectro all the time but have had problems getting it and basically forgot about it!)
