backfire after installing slip ons

I installed some TAB Performance slip ons with the zombie baffles. I also put the K&N on and I bought the tuner and tuned it to the settings it says to. The bike rides fine but I get a backfire once in a while and after every ride, I can smell fuel when I go back into my garage for a day or so. Is this common after installing these?

Not familiar with those slipons and don't know what tuner you are using but it sounds like you need a better tune.

Yeah somethings off there. Combustion should be in the combustion chamber! Tune not right for that combination or there happens to be a mechanical problem.

I figured something was wrong. I'll try to tune it again, maybe I missed something.

I'm using the Power Vision tuner. I plugged it in and followed the directions and it asked me what type of intake and exhaust I was using. It ran fine for the first few weeks but all of a sudden I get a random back fire and now I smell fuel, as if it's running rich.

Are you talking BACKFIRE, or popping here and there on hard deceleration? Here’s what Brian at Fuel Moto told me when I called with same symptoms, stronger smell of fuel, and popping even after auto tuning their custom map for my application. Bike runs strong. He said “the smell is noticeable because the bike isn’t running lean anymore. You’re used to not smelling anything, and now that the bike is running richer, you’ll smell fuel”. So after that, I started looking, and to the man, bikes which have aftermarket tuners smell like they run rich compared to stock setups. Walk behind a bike that smells like it runs rich, and ask the owner if he’s got a tuner. Brian also told me the popping is there, just not as noticeable with stock set-up. There are ways to decrease it from happening, but you’re not going to eliminate it completely. It seems more noticeable when you change pipes because the aftermarket pipes aren’t as baffled. I guess it depends on how bad yours is popping, and just how rich it’s running. If you have actual backfiring, then like you said, you need to take another look. What tuner are you running?

I don't work with that tuner, so I can't tell you what to do specifically.

But there are two strategies for stopping decel exhaust pop.

The easy one, the one that works for the broadest cross section of scooters, is to leave the mix rich at decel. Too rich to light off and pop. Down side is that you'll smell the unburned fuel, and it will give the occasional pop.

The hard way is to turn the fuel off on decel. But that means that you'll have to program some throttle roll on anticipation enrichment. Think accelerator pump in the carb. A shot of fuel as you roll the throttle back on. And that needs to be tailored to the scooter being worked on.

As with most things, the hard way is the best way.

With the tuner I work with, it a setting in the firmware, then adjusting the when, and the how much. The when is the RPM range where it is used. And the how much is just that, how much extra fuel is added.

Thanks for the replies. I now realize that it's just popping on decal and it makes sense that a good tune will make it run rich. Does anyone else smell fuel in the garage after a ride on their bike?

Yep. More so if I close the garage door immediately after a ride.

Decel pop

I also have the FP3 tuner,

There is a setting in the program that allows you to adjust the amount of deceleration pop from zero to plenty.

Maybe take a look at that?
