Speed sensor

Out riding yesterday and my speedo and odometer stopped working. Came to a stop at a red light and bike shut off. Turned ignition off then back on a she fired right back up but still no speedo or odometer. 5 - 7 miles later check engine light came on. Pulled over shut it off and sat there a few minutes. Started and rode another ten miles home with no issues. Speedo worked, no check engine light.

Today I pulled the speed sensor and it looked fine. Wiped it off and put some dielectric grease on connections. Anything else I should be looking into?

Same thing happened to me last year while I got caught in a heavy rain storm.
Shut the bike off and on five times to reset it and it was fine. I always thought that it was too much moisture in one of the connections that caused it.

So was it a one time thing?

Had a speed sensor fail on my 99 Softail. Replaced it and all was well. Hopefully yours was just a glitch and stays good now - they ain't overly cheap for what it is. Think I paid $76 for one through JP Cycles.
