Noise in the primary

I just recently had my compensator replaced and had a Hayden tensioner put on. Bike runs amazing. But when the bike stops at a light, or at home, after its warm the bike makes a strange sound. Like a little clanging around. But my rpm's seem to be dropping to 800 when this happens. If I give it a little throttle it's gone. Anyone have any ideas before I tear it all apart?

Did they check the inner primary bearing and race when they installed the Hayden tensioner? Is the noise coming from the Primary area?

Yes it coming from the primary. It only make noise at 800 rpm. As soon as you increase the rpm's noise goes away.

I would check the inner primary bearing and race. It doesn't make a clanging sound when it goes bad, but the residual effects can. When the Primary bearing or Main gear bearing fail they can cause the teeth on the clutch basket starter gear to rub the inner wall of the inner primary case. Mine did this, but I had so many other noises going on it was hard to tell.

This would make sense to me since under load the noise goes away. You can easily check the main gear bearing at the same time as checking the inner primary bearing. If the main gear has any play at all it should be replaced. I went thru this on my 2009 a couple months back and was shocked by how many bearings were bad.

Another thought, the hayden is simple design with no damping and a fairly light spring taking up the slack in the chain. I would think if the initial spring preload was too light, combined with low RPM the pulses from the compensator could cause the primary chain to slap the tensioner.

Also, I found that switching out the POS auto tensioner to a Baker fixed shoe the lighter load on the primary chain made totally different noises. The overly tight primary chain whines and has no lash in the drivetrain. The fixed shoe makes zero whine and the drivetrain feels "looser". Not really sure how else to describe it.

My guess would be chain slap at low RPM also. My main bearing went bad in my 09 not long ago and the noise was more of a scraping sound like a warped rotar might make. Also when I would pull on the clutch the noise would go away.

I think that's what it is chain slap. Do you think that will improve. I rode the bike today and didn't hear it even once

Bump the idle up and it'll probably quiet down. If that doesn't help could pop the primary open and make sure the hayden is shimmed correctly.

Also as I mentioned earlier you will hear different noises after swapping to a fixed tensioner. I got used to the new sound.

You have your engine idling at 800 rpms?? That isnt good for the charging system to start. With the added draw of the fuel pump you should have it idling at 1000k for the fuel injection to work properly

Also if your hearing noise have you had the compensator checked or replaced? ITs possible the noise could be coming from that.
