Which Cases?

Now here is going to be a good discussion I hope. As I had said, I am building a 117" engine and looking for as much input from people as I can.

For this poll, I am curious on which cases I should go with? I struggle with the criteria that I have set and for this engine, the main criteria is that the engine must be damn near bulletproof. I have heard some horror stories about HD cases as many say that they are just weak but they are very affordable. On the other hand, I haven't heard enough about the S&S cases to make a decent decision about them. This makes me want to steer from them because of my ignorance, and of course the price tag that they want for them, but I will spend the extra if the S&S cases are really that much more superior than that of HD's.

So please, if you have some experience with this subject, and I don't care how little experience you have with them, please vote and comment as this is an important aspect of the build and I want to get it right. Please explain your choice the best you can, simply voting only doesn't really help much.

Thanks gentleman.

I'm certainly not the best person to speak on this subject. I've never heard anything bad about the HD cases except for the internals. The S&S and Ultima I would assume come built to handle the greater HP & TQ whereas the HD crank and bearings will ideally need to be welded, trued, balanced, and the Timken bearing installed to safely handle the added power as well as being bored to accept the 117" cylinders.

By the time you factor the cost of what you need to do to the HD bottom end you might be better served with the S&S or Ultima.

I have no advice to give but, I will tag this thread. I've thought about a 117 Touring type of build myself. If I go this route I will most likely use "T-Man stuff" but, as Hullhorr said by the time you build out the bottom end??? I don't know maby I'm dollars ahead just buying Harleys 120r.

I'll be watching this thread closely.

For sure! If building a single cam engine from scratch I'd go Delkron.

Look at most drag bikes and you see Delkron or S&S. No Ultima... Delkron don't make twin cam cases. Compatible, but they are 4 cam. (as far as I'm aware that is...)

If I was building a motor from scratch, S&S would be automatic choice.

If in fact we were to ever build another drag bike, S&S cases would be our choice here. No brainer.
Our ex-AHDRA Mod Class bike(still sits in the retail area) ran House of Horsepower cases.
THE first outfit, to EVER, offer a 356-T6 aluminum alloy casting for these bikes, but long, long gone now.
We we racing ECRA, and AHDRA, when some of these johnny-come-lately shops were playing with their skateboards..............

nothing wrong with stock cases for big inch street TC`s.we`ve built TONS of 124" (140+HP) motors using stock cases, not one problem.as far as drag cases go,most seroius drag motors use billit cases (our gas & nitro bikes have since the late 90`s (our smaller motors we ran in the 80`s & early 90`s did use delkron though)

I suppose that I should have also said that I am not planning on running HD wheels. For this build I have chosen to run Hoban Brothers crank and rods and have them press the Timken in and have it ready for gear drives.

We have a some common friends and one of them is saying that the weak spot in the S&S cases is some sort of center bolt. Can you explain this more? Tell us why this is such a weak spot?
