Low Oil Pressure

I have a '17 FLTRU with 17K miles. Luckily, still under warranty. My low oil pressure light lit up when I left for work yesterday morning. It has come on occasionally right after I start the bike, but when I stopped, turned off the motor and restarted, it did not reoccur. When I reported this to the Stealer during regular maintenance, I was told to wait longer between turning on the bike, and starting the bike. This time the oil light stays on. Oil level full. I checked the DTCs and yep there were two codes (PO522/23) related to low oil pressure, sensor voltages etc.

The local Stealer is coming by to pick up the bike tomorrow (Saturday). More to follow.

With your bike being a '17 you probably still have the first generation of the M8 oil pump. Some of the first '17s couldn't be started on the jiffy stand because the oil pumps would lose prime. The MoCo is now on the 3rd gen oil pump because of problems with loss of oil pressure. When the '17s were coming out, I saw a new CVO oil pump fail during the initial 10 mile ride after setup. There for a while the MoCo had a kit for techs to use called a "super kit" that came with a new oil pump, new inner cam bearing, new cam, new cam plate and new tensioner just because there were so many problems.

Hopefully the dealership where you bike is going knows about this stuff. If so, they should be able to replace your oil pump under warranty, which will give you the latest and greatest version.

The dealer came and picked up my bike Saturday. He had a long trailer and could not turn around where I lived, so I started the bike and road out of the subdivision where I live. When I started the bike, the oil light did not come on. Oil pressure was OK now. Cheez. The DTCs are still available, so I hope the dealer does not say, "no trouble found" and do nothing..... More to follow.

I had oil lite come on as I rode brand new bike home from dealer. Turned around and showed service mgr. They verified oil level ok, said it was sensor, and I had it replaced later. Prior to replacement, lite was intermittent. Hasnít been problem since sensor replacement.

^^^This is a common issue with numerous year model bikes and not just the M8. The oil pressure sending unit can go bad on a whim and will cause a lot of stress. Real easy fix if that is the case.

Day 1: Bike trailered back to the dealer
Day 4: No response or call, so called the dealer at the end of the day. Told the tech was out that day and they would call me back in the morning.
Day 5: Waited for call from Service it didn't happen. I called near closing time. Service told me they saw a problem, regular oil pressure and then moments of no oil pressure. They saw a problem to diagnose.
Day 6: Service calls and says there is no problem found, nothing they can do. What the "fruck" happened yesterday? I shared that the oil pump and sender issues were well documented as problems on this forum. I also told them I knew from the forum that HD was on their 3rd generation oil pump. I also communicated that I had reported this problem on two previous service calls with no action taken by the dealer, once when I was in Arkansas (BBB Rally). Lastly I commented, "I am leaving on a 2,500 mile ride from Colorado, (Lone Star Rally). Would they leave on this ride knowing there was "no problem found" regarding this well documented oil pressure issue?
Day 6: Service called me back and HD agreed to replace the sender.
Day 7: No call back today.

More to follow. God, can't imagine why HD is losing customers? <rhetorical question>.

My 17 the light came on once about 4 months ago i kept on riding as I was on a long trip and if it were going to blow under warranty it was going to go good. It went off after about 30 minutes. So last week it started staying on after i started it much like you I could shut it off and start it right back up and it would stay off. Changed my sender a $12 part and its good now.

Hopefully the sender is the problem as well. That said, "hope" is not my plan or strategy on the road to Galveston........... -Thanks.

Day 10. Called the dealer again. The first tech told me they were still trying to "diagnose the oil pressure fluctuation problem". I questioned him since the tech on Day 7 said that HD had approved replacing the sender. He was confused and caught in a BS answer. He then looked on their computer and said 'oh the sender is on order and will get in tomorrow. What a bunch of BS. "We will work on it immediately".

Day 10 and still no bike with different stories.....

Call back Thursday and each following day if necessary, until they complete this simple and low cost fix.
