Running rich, sluggish under 2k

So I am at a loss here, my bike just randomly started to run kind of rough under 2k rpm. It feels sluggish, lack of throttle response and throughout the entire RPM range the exhaust doesn't sound quite right, it sounds almost muffled. Details on the bike and the day it started below.

2015, 16k miles, woods 555 cams, thunderheader, power vision (fuel moto tune), stage 1 air cleaner, new plugs and wires. We installed the cams over the winter and I have since put about 2-300 miles with no issues. Checked the crank runout at the time of the install and it was only about .003" well within tolerance. Run only 91-93 octane in it, unless the station does not carry then I run 91.

I got gas that morning and we rode about 40 miles before stopping for lunch. Once we left it stated falling on its face going up hills and occasional backfire out the pipe between shifts. I ran about half a tank out, put seafoam in it and filled up at a different gas station. No difference so far. The only engine codes I seen were running rich in both cylinders.

Thanks,
Mike

Thunderheader, Woods 555 cams, Power Vision, Sony radio, Rockford/Hertz speakers.

Did everyone else fill up at the same pump?

Usually when it happens after fueling up, fuel is the main suspect. I would drain it and put in known good fuel from a place you trust and get some star tron fuel enzyme treatment.

If that doesn't clear it up, then you will have to look deeper.

I would agree with his recommendation

Sounds like you purchased some bad gasoline

High octane with 1oz. per gallon of Seafoam in your tank and hopefully you’ll be good to go.

No I was the only on to fuel up there. I am hoping for so decent weather tomorrow so I can get out and run more of the gas out. If not I will just try and drain it put in fresh. I will post an update once I get fresh gas in it.

If the bike is running rich and backfiring it is a tuning problem IMO. Take it in and get a good tune done to the bike. Also there may be a problem with the engine temp sensor, if the temp sensor is malfunctioning then the computer will see that the bikes engine temp is low and add more fuel to the engine causing the bike to run rich. Pull the spark plugs and see what color they are if the are black and look like there is soot on the plugs then the bike is running rich, if the plugs are tan colored the bike is running with right fuel mixture and your problem may be something else.

If it is potentially bad gas, why would you want to run it through your very expensive engine? You can get a pump from an autoparts store and pump it out. Even putting in fresh gas will only do so much. You need an additive to help clear it out.

I agree with the other posts that it could also be a tuner issue, but I would swap out the fuel first.

So a little update, I drained the gas to 1/4 tank because that's all I could get out. Filled with sea foam and 93. Ran about 75 miles today. On the first leg about 30 miles it ran fine. We stopped for lunch sat about 45 minutes and we left. Once we left it started again, running rough under 2k. No engine codes this time, and at idle it sounds somewhat normal. I can run auto tune but if it is bad gas I don't want to have it tuned with bad gas. Also the tune I am running was fine the first 200 miles I rode this year. Ohio weather will keep me from getting this tank of gas ran through for a few days. I'm really baffled since it runs fine until we stop for a bit.

Did you remove the tank recently for one of your mods? maybe pinched vent hose?

No I even pulled the tank off and checked wiring under it and made sue I didn't have any issues with my plug wires. Last season I had a front cylinder issue were the plug wire rubbed against the tank and was grounding.
