Not a crazy build because it was unplanned

2 years ago a local dealer had to do rod bearings and also changed the lifters otherwise I would have missed Sharkweek (I had S&S lifters in it from a stage 1 and to this day question the lifter change). 2 years later, on my way back from Sharkweek in Deadwood, the upper end really started making ungodly noises, even though it still ran strong. (commented in this thread) https://www.roadglide.org/3-*genera...073-holy-crow-these-things-got-expensive.html

Luckily for me, Dave who originally did the stage 1 (excellent guy and awesome dyno tuner) has his new shop open in PA so off it goes. He is worth the trip out of state. After some digging inside even he mentioned he could not even figure out what lifters the dealer actually put back into my bike. The lifters were blackened pretty bad for only having 12k on them they did not match anything he has seen before !!!!! After some discussions, and being that the crank is in awesome shape (runout only 2 thousands) I was thinking to myself, well if Dave is already into the motor ………….
what are you having done, if i might inquire?
I'm very curious to hear Dave's report on his motor work. A cam change is a whole lot cheaper than a new bike.
Again as much as I WOULD LOVE one of his 124 builds, budget is not there. (budget not even there for this one ) We discussed one of his 110 builds including ported heads, new cam, new head pipe, new larger throttle body, variable pressure clutch, etc. etc. and of course, Dave doing the Dyno tuning.
Ultimate goal is reliability with more mid-range toque and a smooth tune for fun riding while 2 up with gear, not top horsepower. I’m thinking 130 ft-lb would be perfect >:)!!

The funny thing is towards the end of our conversation when I said “ F-it, let’s do it!” Dave commented back “Awesome. I had already sent the heads out!” Well, I guess Dave knows me better than I thought.:laugh:

A new Motor is a lot cheaper than a new bike, I can’t want to see the torque number Dave gets from this.

Well. I received a call today from Dave. He found metal embedded in the piston skirts!! Uh oh!!. The high volume oil pump installed by Harley 2 years ago had a lot of scoring on the scavenging side. He is thinking maybe from poor installation??? (again supports @Nordic Berserker comment above).
Now it looks like a reality of having to replace the crank! He feels confident with this build of using a welded and balanced Harley crank rather then spending a ton more money on a S&S crank. He even mentioned that he has noticed multiple increases in S&S pricing.

This will be a discussion when he calls me back with complete details, my budget is now really blown, so I may not be able too!
UGH!! Oh well, I do what I have to do to ride.

Still have no desire of a new bike yet!

Marc sorry to hear about your engine trouble.
Hopefully, you'll be able to get everything fixed properly this time around.
Sounds like Dave has a very good reputation.
As far as Dealerships for repairs, My 12 has never been there as I am capable of doing all My Own Repairs.
Best of Luck Bro!
Keep Us posted on how it all goes.

Going with a upgraded crank. Plan on keeping this bike for many more years so now is the time to do it and forget it!!!

Have to figure out budget changes to make this work but I know it will be worth it in the end

This basically sums up this weekend!!!

Does this mean I’ll have less competition in the raffle at SWX? Seriously, it may hurt the budget a bit, but go ahead and do the engine the way you want it. Although I’m extremely happy with the engine in my 10, I still wish I would’ve gone a little larger since I did crank work. I should have enlarged the bore on the case and gone 117. My 10 will still run circles around my 17.

Mike, I put it here so it doesn't distract from the fun in the other thread :)

Bottom half is already built. The only item we are waiting on are the heads to come back from the machinist.
Then it should only be a couple of days.

Once i get the results after tuning, ill post it here.

I feel like a kid waiting for Christmas! :). I don't care how cold it gets, I cant wait to ride this thing!!!!!!

Eddie, i am leaving this one completely in Dave's hands. Going through all of this all I want s a solid reliable build, with a smooth torque curve.

And of course, i want the torque above 130 >:)

Once i get the results, ill let you know what the final numbers are

I had a 103 with a stage 1. almost 60k on the motor but the dealership had thier hands in it when Dave took a couple of years off. (all when the EPA BS hit Harley, I am so glad he is back!!) Praying for a mild winter so I can try it out!
He is a super nice guy. PM me and I will send you his information (i believe it is against forum rules just to post them here)

Happy Friday!

Happy Happy Friday!!!! Finally got the initial numbers back from Dave at JD's Cycles. Using a mild cam and port job, new throttle body, got 125 Ft-lb of torque on a 110 build. Not the 130 goal but right in line with what we were expecting.
I should be good for the next 5 years ?
This should be perfect for touring the country. The second hardest part of all of this is the waiting. (hardest part is paying for it LOL)
I can’t wait to finally ride it! :)

Finally picked up the bike this weekend, took it out for a couple of hours once i got it home! Froze by butt off but who cares!! Dave (builder) got the torque right where ! ride it the most, approx 3000 to 4500 RPM. nothing but smiles.

Then......... @Nordic Berserker made this video from his phone! I could not stop laughing!!!!

Glad you got it running the way you like it, Mischief. Did I miss the build specs?
Sorry, I was excited to finally get it back I forgot,
Ended up with a S&S 110 kit, crank and lifters, HPI throttle body, TTS 150 cam, heads done by Megaflo, swapped my Fuel Moto head pipe for a Bassani and added a VPC clutch.
Basically a entire new motor and primary
Now to get another 8 years out of this one[emoji16]
